During a quiet night after a long day of photography, I put some thought into how I caught the Photo Bug. When I was young, I had an interest in photography. All that was available to me at the time was film. Looking at the cost of film photography, and the other things I was interested in, my dad got me a computer and a few comic books every week. There, my first interest in photography died, and my inner geek was born.

In my senior year of high school I took a trip to Quebec and Montreal city, Canada. I was given disposable cameras to document my trip. I spent time visiting foreign comic books stores, seeing the sites, drinking coffee and taking pictures. It was consuming. Photography is an intractable process which you either love or don’t care for. I loved it, but then my mom was laid off, and I had to put my computer skills to work to get through college and support the family. The cost of photography was still an issue. It was another photographic false start.

Time passed, my inner geek grew, and so did I. I started a career, eventually got married, and had children. Now in a career in the IT industry, I learned about digital cameras and I got a used one, an Olympus Camedia D-560, which I still have. Now that I did not have to develop, film photography was suddenly open to me.
I took some time off, went to Otakon, an Anime convention in Maryland, with some friends. I was happily taking pictures with a Kodak EasyShare V1003 Zoom of cosplayers. I was capturing events around me during that trip. It got to the point where I was not satisfied with the images.

After Otakon, I kept thinking, ‘I can do better’ to the point where it became a mantra. I learned the camera can only capture what’s in front of the lens. I started learning that if I changed how I stood, my angle, what was in front of the camera looked better. Frustrated with the Olympus and the Kodak, a friend gave me a Canon Powershot S3 IS. With this camera I started teaching myself the art of photography. It was my first camera with a Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual mode. I became infatuated with photography.

When I realized the Canon would not cut it forever, I began my research into my first DSLR. I lusted over full frames but my budget was tight. After testing everything in my price range, I decided on a Nikon D90 and it has been a grand adventure ever since. The photography world is reminiscent of the world of KungFu in movies. It has its masters, schools and characters all contending to be the best. They are looking to take that one great photo. It’s fun to be involved.

I can honestly sit and have a coffee with you and tell you I am not a great photographer. I do, however, enjoy the craft of photography immensely. There is always something to learn, explore, and create.
