The masterminds from Nikon must’ve had Xzibit’s famous phraseology in mind when they conceived “My Nikon World“, a new photo sharing service that is basically its own small social network within the boundaries of facebook. We think it went something like this: “Yo Dawg! I herd you like social netwerks, so we put a social netwerk in your social netwerk so you can netwerk while you netwerk!”
Basically, “My Nikon World” is a facebook app that allows you to share your photos in personal galleries, compete in challenges which are hosted by Nikon pro photographers, and get feedback on your work by other community users. In order to use it, you need to give the app permission to access your facebook profile. On the upside, since it is based on facebook, this means you can also use it on your mobile device. And the more active you are in the “My Nikon World” community, the more rewards you will earn.
Social photography communities are not a new idea, though–just look at what dpreview have been doing with their challenges for a while now, or the way 500px and flickr work (sans the contests, that is). So if you’re already part of one of the existing communities, “My Nikon World” may not be for you. But if you’re a diehard Nikon fan, or just happen to be an amateur Nikon user, it may be a great way to get more exposure, get inspiration from the work of others and get feedback on your own work in order to improve your photography.
