Late last night Nikon announced two new zooms lenses, one for their FX full frame line and another for their DX crop line . The first is the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f3.5-4.5G ED VR lens and the second is the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR lens.
Nikon’s new FX lens is probably going to become the new kit lens for some unnamed future full frame camera. The range of 24-85mm is quite versatile and probably the most useful range for photography. The catch is the aperture range of f3.5-4.5 will probably leave most full frame users wanting more shallow depth of field. If you are a landscape photographer like myself or casual street shooter this lens should be useful because I feel the aperture range would be fine. For landscape users the lens would be extremely sharp at the usual f8 or f10 aperture.
A new feature to a Nikon lens is “Tripod Auto Detect” and its purpose is to set a specialized VR correction that works for video recording.
The DX 18-300mm is quite the monster zoom and is in fact Nikon’s most powerful all in one lens to date. This particular lens has been on a Nikon European site for a long time so its not much of a surprise. I’m not sure if they were feeling the pressure by third part companies who have been making this range for awhile but but Nikon decided to give it a go. The new DX mega zoom offers all the features that you would expect in a new modern Nikon lens including Vibration Reduction, Silent Wave Motor and even some ED glass. The lens has quite an impressive 16.7x magnification and with Nikon’s second generation VR giving it stable support for up to 4 stops. The lens in a 35mm equivalent adds up to a whopping 27-450mm, the lens also matches the popular 18-200mm lens at the most tele-end with an aperture of f5.6.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f3.5-4.5G ED VR lens is going to retail for $599.95 and more information can be found here.
The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR lens  is going to retail for $999.95 and more information can be found here.
Both lenses are available on B&H Photo’s website for your eye-lusting needs.
