A Quick Test with the Spyder Lenscal at Photo Plus Expo

While everyone was busy having fun at the tweetup, I was stuck writing you this posting about just how awesome the Spyder Lenscal is and uploading videos to a server. So here, while you weren’t at Photo Plus Expo 2010, I was able to check out the product and saw just how off one of my lenses was.

So at first, I thought I’d just take a photo of the unit. Then I though, “Hmmm, why not try it out myself in a quick test?”

So I shot the flatplane and realized that my lens was backfocusing. Then I went into the Canon 7D’s custom menu and microadusted the lens.

Then the rep and I realized I was microadjusting the wrong direction.

Then I went three mm in the other direction and was able to achieve pretty darn tack sharp focus.

Once again, this was a quick test and we’ll be requesting a review unit sooner or later.

Adapting DSLR lenses of all kinds to your mirrorless camera has long been one of the coolest things about going mirrorless. It has also made that process of transferring from an old DSLR system to a newer mirrorless one that much easier of a process for a lot of photographers. The caveat being that the majority of these adapters are just dummy adapters, meaning they hold the lens in the right spot, but there is no AF or electronic communication to the camera.

Review: BenQ SW240 Monitor for Photographers

Only a couple of years ago a high-end monitor with a built-in calibration and profile system which was also capable of displaying the entire Adobe RGB (1998) gamut cost serious money. And then BenQ upended that game with the SW series monitors. If you are in the market for a high-performance monitor, performance wise the BenQ SW models are right up there with the Eizo ColorEdge and NEC PA monitors but cost substantially less.

Review: J.B. Camera Designs Grip for Olympus OM-D EM-5

The first accessory that many current, or soon-to-be, OM-D owners take a look is the official OM-D grip put out by Olympus, the HLD-6. This is a pretty impressive grip but it priced at just under $300 which is rather steep for a grip. I understand there is a lot of technology/functionality built into the grip and it has two separate pieces (the grip and the battery), but some photographers (like me) only want the grip. Apparently I wasn’t alone because J.B. Camera Designs produced a grip that was exactly what I was looking for.
