And the World Reopens. Leica 24-70mm f2.8 SL Review

The Leica 24-70mm f2.8 SL isn’t just a clone of the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art Lens.

If you thought that the Leica 24-70mm f2.8 SL is just a Sigma lens, then you’re wrong. I personally own and use the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art lens. And after working with the Leica 24-70mm f2.8 SL for a while, I can say this definitively. They’re not the same. The Sigma is negligibly lighter. The Leica isn’t even noticeably larger. But what’s evident is the autofocus speed and the build quality. Essentially, the Leica 24-70mm f2.8 SL is the best of both worlds. In some ways, it’s the ultimate 24-70mm for the lens system. In other ways, the L mount continues to do things that perplex me.

Our Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 Art Review Got an Important Update

We’re still scratching our head a bit, but our Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art Review has been updated.

Our initial Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art Review gave the lens very high marks. It has 11 aperture blades, great image quality, and it’s weather sealed. Considering the price, it seems like an obvious purchase for most users. But there’s a very different story to be told when actually using the lens. When we first reviewed it, we tested it on the Sony E mount system. I purposely chose the Sony a7r III because the autofocus and resolution combo made the most sense. But, I now own the Leica SL2s and bought the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8. Earlier this year, the combo frustrated me in low light. After the recent Leica SL2s firmware update, though, things have changed.

We Updated Our Panasonic 24-70mm F2.8 Review! It’s Faster Now!

The Panasonic 24-70mm f2.8 Lumix S Pro isn’t so sluggish after all: it just needed better cameras.

A while back, we reviewed the Panasonic 24-70mm f2.8. In that review, we stated that the lens was pretty slow to focus. But we blamed it on the system overall. We recently updated our Panasonic 24-70mm f2.8 Review, which you can check out here. We’ve been holding onto our loaner lenses for a while and found a pleasant surprise. With the new Leica SL2s firmware update, the Panasonic 24-70mm f2.8 is now faster than it is on Panasonic’s own camera bodies. We tried it on the Leica SL2s, the Panasonic S5, and the Panasonic S1. Quite frankly, I never had hope for the S1. But the S5 has to be one of my favorite cameras Panasonic has made. It’s fascinating to now find the shoe on the other foot.

The Leica 24-70mm F2.8 ASPH SL Addresses a Big Concern

We’re told that the Leica 24-70mm f2.8 ASPH SL will even say “Made in Japan.”

I guess it was inevitable that Leica would use Sigma lenses to boost their lens lineup. And that’s sort of what’s happening with the Leica 24-70mm f2.8 ASPH SL. This lens is for the Leica L mount. It uses Sigma optics and rehouses them in a more rugged metal body. Sigma tends to use something they call carbon-composite. It makes their lenses lighter, even though their Art lineup is still pretty heavy. With this Leica, we’re told it’s still under 2lbs. That’s a bit reassuring, considering that many of Leica’s L mount lenses require you to lift weights. But, when you realize the image quality, internal construction, and build quality, it becomes a bit more understandable.

Did Sigma Do Better? The Panasonic 24-70mm F2.8 LUMIX Pro Review

With the Panasonic 24-70mm f2.8 LUMIX Pro, photographers are getting a lens that’s high quality but held back by the system’s autofocus.

For the past year, I feel like I’ve been singing the same song about the L mount alliance’s glass offerings, and the Panasonic 24-70mm f2.8 LUMIX Pro is no different. Panasonic has engineered a top-notch lens in almost every way, but the issue has more to do with the camera system. While readers have said the L mount system is pretty fast, we haven’t had the same experiences at all. Everyone else has managed to pull ahead of the L mount alliance for autofocus speed and performance. I’d like to believe this issue will be fixed one day, but until then, the Panasonic 24-70mm f2.8 LUMIX Pro is still a solid investment into the system. From an image quality standpoint, it’s one of the best 24-70mm lenses we’ve tested–even if it is big, costly, and married to a system that desperately needs to improve their autofocus.

First Impressions: Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm F2.8 (Super Sharp!)

The Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f2.8 is arguably the best zoom we’ve used for the system so far.

The results of Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f2.8 will mean a lot for the company. In my opinion, it’s one of three lenses that will determine the success of the L mount alliance in its early stages. Along with the Panasonic 50mm f1.4 and the Sigma 35mm f1.2, these lenses are some of the options most targeted to professional photographers. Leica has an excellent selection of glass, but let’s be honest: it also comes at a premium. We’re not sure how many professional photographers will reach for Leica lenses. But, they’ll reach for Sigma and Panasonic due to the price and performance they offer. If Panasonic can fix its autofocus algorithms, the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 24-70mm f2.8 will make their cameras an excellent contender vs the rest of the options on the market.
