Ali Choudhry’s Portraits Convey Edgy Characters in Everyday People

“I started photography about 7 years ago when my partner gifted me a camera for Christmas.” photographer Ali Choudhry tells us in an email. “I had recently lost my possessions in a house flood and this was his way of getting me back into art as I often mentioned some of the things I’d lost.” Ali specifically says the word art because of his portraiture process involving the specific creation of photos, not their capturing. When Ali sent his initial email, I could from the words that he was holding back from showing us some of his best work–and instead being timid to show off all the work that every other photographer has out there on Instagram.

But I asked him to resubmit–and was pleasantly surprised.

Photography as a Method for Dealing with Introversion

I have a hard time around new people. At parties, I look for the one person I know, and if that’s a wash, I float at the edges of conversations. I’m terrible at introducing myself, though if I’m okay if I’m introduced. The thing about introversion is that I get my energy from within and from my pursuits. Social functions can be exhausting, and I sometimes need to remove myself to the periphery in order to recharge. Photography and by extension writing, like the work I do for this site, quickly became a natural fit for me because it allows me to contextualize my thoughts and put them out into the world in a way that engages with people, which is what draws me to photographing on the street. Thoughts On Introverted Personalities and Photography

According to, the word Introvert means:

a person characterized by concern primarily with his or her own thoughts and feelings.”

Which brings us to a subject that I’ve been discussing back and forth with many photographers for months before I even sat down to pen this piece. It’s about introversion and being a photographer, painter, or any sort of artist to begin with. Introverts are very much concerned with themselves and in many cases, their social behaviors can either be all about them or there can be a big lack of social behavior. With the growth and development of the web, introversion has also become even more widespread.

An introverted photographer shoots for themselves: they don’t think or care about what a client wants, they shoot for what they want. A hobbyist photographer that is totally fine taking photos of flowers, cats, or shooting nudes is a perfectly fine person to be. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being introverted and being all about just you. But with that said, the person is so absorbed in what they’re doing that they start to care less and less about others and only about furthering their own ambitions.
