Creating the Photograph: Danny Alexander’s “Pink Rose”

Creating the Photograph is an original series where photographers teach you about how they conceived an image, shot it, and edited it. The series has a heavy emphasis on teaching readers how to light. Want to be featured? Email chrisgampat[at]thephoblographer[dot]com.

Photographer Danny Alexander has tagged us in a number of his images on Instagram and we discovered him and his great strobist work this way. He’s a portrait photographer working in Louisville, KY. “I’ve slowly been turning my passion into a full time job and my work can be found in local and nationally published magazines,” says Danny. “Although I spend most of my time shooting editorial portraits, I do make time to work on creative personal projects. If I had to say I had a style in photography it would be that I take a strobist approach.” That’s perfect for our Creating the Photograph series.

In fact, Danny rarely works with just natural light. “I love the technical side of working with strobes to create interesting lighting in my portraits.” he states.

So that’s where the story of Pink Rose begins.

Skin on Canvas: a Portrait Study of Tattooed People (NSFW)

All images by Danny Alexander. Used with permission.

Danny Alexander is a portrait photographer living in Louisville, KY. He’s been previously featured on the site’s Creating the Photograph series, and didn’t really go to school for photography. In fact, he studied philosophy.

“I had first purchased a camera in order to take photos as reference for some writing I was doing at the time but found myself spending more time with the camera than I was writing.” he tells the Phoblographer. “Eventually I gave up on the writing altogether and focused entirely on photography.” He has been published in several magazines including Modern Louisville and Ar Leith.

Since then, Danny has completed several projects including the year long 52 Portrait Project and, more recently, a tattoo portrait series entitled Skin as Canvas. The latter is a study of Danny calls “intimate representation of some aspect of that person’s life.”

Creating the Photograph: Danny Alexander’s “Week 27”

Creating the Photograph is an original series where we interview photographers about a photo that they shot and how it was achieved. The results are some knowledge passed on to you. Want to be featured? Email chrisgampat[at]thephoblographer[dot]com.

Photographer Danny Alexander is a photographer based in Louisville, Kentucky shooting primarily portraits but will never pass up the opportunity to capture something that catches his eye. He recently finished up a personal project shooting a portrait of a different subject every week for a year and greatly enjoys creating portraits that exhibit some unique or interesting aspect of the individual he’s working with.

“I tend to gravitate towards environmental portraiture for this reason,” he said.

So when pitching his portfolio to us, we took a look and saw that Danny indeed followed through on his idea for a special and totally new portrait each week. As you browse through, you can see his progression and changing ideas. So we asked him to talk to us a bit about one specific photo.

Here’s Danny’s story.
