They started out as more of a gimmick, and many photographers still do not take them seriously, but phone accessory lenses have come a long way in the last few years. There are some very solid options for people looking to not only get great images from their phone, but also extend their capabilities without sacrificing much, if any, image quality. One of the new, but higher quality players in the accessory lens game is Zeiss, and they just announced two new additions to their iPhone 6 line of accessory lenses.
The lenses include both a telephoto lens and a macro zoom lens. The Mutar 2.0x Asph T* offers a short telephoto frame of view equivalent to that of a 56mm lens on a full frame camera. In other words, this should be a great lens for portraits (should you decide you want to do that with your phone) or even something like street photography. The ZEISS Vario-Proxar 40-80 T* is a macro-zoom lens that allows users to capture objects as close as three centimeters away from the lens.
Both lenses offer a perfect fit on an iPhone 6 thanks to the special aluminium bracket that is designed to fit on the phone and hold the lenses in place. In terms of cost, these are Zeiss optics that we are talking about, and just because they are small, it doesn’t mean the cost is. The Mutar 2.0x will retail for $199.99, while the Vario-Proxar will retail for $149. The lenses will be available for purchase mid-september 2016 with the brackets going on sale separately for $50 sometime in October.
More information about these new lenses can be found over on the Zeiss website, here.
