The Nikon D3100, even as an entry level, is a great multipurpose camera. I work well in taking portraits, food photography, and product photography. It works well with a flash and external lighting. The Nikon D3100 can be used in a studio situation, a restaurant or even with a strobe light.
Gear Used

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
Nikon 55-200mm VR AF-S f/4-5.6G ED
Food

The Nikon D3100 is great for food photography. The camera when paired with a Nikon 35mm 1.8G or Nikon 50mm F/1.8 D lens can allow a person to easily capture a food image in almost any situation. The camera handles High ISOs very well. It can be bumped up to ISO 800 with little to no noise. The size of the camera makes it less conspicuous, and easily retrieved and put away when the need arises.
Products

With the right settings and lighting this camera can grab product images for any situation. The Nikon D3100 can used with a light box or just on a table. Its spot metering gives good results in dim light. If you are selling products on the internet or just need quick images to show clients this camera will give great results at a low cost.
Portraits

This camera takes good portraits. The quality of the images is good especially with good lighting. You can go spur-of-the-moment or in a studio and get decent shots. With the Nikon D3100, it all depends on how well you know the camera. The image here is of my friend John Perez. He was assisting me on a light kit we were working on a at Red Cedar Studios. I edited in Lightroom.
