If you ever wanted to see what an erupting volcano looks like up close, right next to its lava-spewing maw—this is it. YouTuber Shaun O’Callaghan caught some amazing footage of the erupting Yasur volcano on Tanna Island in Vanuatu all thanks to his DJI Phantom quadcopter.
With a camera attached to the drone, O’Callaghan captured the continuous volcanic eruption putting his multi-thousand dollar flyer into the fray of face-melting, or in this case robot melting seismic fury. It’s an astonishing view few photographers would put themselves in but the resulting footage is fantastic with searing hot ash blowing up rocks and debris as flaming balls of fire and lava fly past the drone.
Incredibly the drone came through unscathed as O’Callaghan mentions that, “amazingly no Phantoms were harmed in the making of this video.” Watch it after the jump.
