Sony is making a serious play 4K camcorder world and now it has announced the AX100 as its very first compact 4K Handcam Camcorder. Compared to the FDR-AX100, Sony’s first 4K video camera aimed at amateurs and professionals introduced in September, the AX100 is 74% smaller and 66% lighter. Although it’s smaller, the camera still records 4K Ultra HD video at a 3840 x 2160 resolution using the 14.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor.
The camera’s capabilities are also boosted with the Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens. Made with 17 elements in 11 groups the lens starts off on the 29mm wide-angle end and can zoom up to 12 times optically. Thanks to the BIONZ X processor it can also record 24fps and 30fps movies even at full resolution. The Sonly Handycam AX100 4K camcorder will be available in March for $1999.99.
In another technology push feat, Sony also introduced the HDR-AS100V, a new entry in its wearable action camera line. Packed inside a splash proof underwater housing, the HDR-AS100V features an 18MP Exmor R CMOS sensor coupled with the ultra-wide ZEISS Tessar lens yielding an impressive 170-degree viewing angle. The action cam records 1080p video at 24fps and faster, high-speed shooting modes in 720p at 120fps or 240fps. The Sony HDR-AS100V POV action cam is slated for a March release and a asking price of $299.99.
Beyond Sony’s two headline video cameras, the Japanese electronics giant also announced seven other Handycam additions with a little something for everything.
Heading up the 2014 line is the flagship HDR-CX900 sporting a 14.2MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor. Optically the camera boasts the 29mm ZEISS Vario Sonnar T lens, which can zoom up to 12 times. What’s more the CX900 can record full 1080p HD video at 50 Mbps using the new XAVC S codec and create artistic, slow motion pans with 120fps shooting. Video savvy shooters will be able to pick up the Sony HDR-CX900 for $1,500 at a yet to be announced release date.
