Nikon has introduced some fantastic cameras over the years. The P1100 was designed to cater to bird photographers, while the Zf is for those who want a dash of retro in their design. While we haven’t seen much from the company this time, it appears that is about to change soon. Nikon has a compact camera up its sleeve, which will both help millennials and Gen Z alike.
According to Nikon Rumors, Nikon is in the midst of reviving the DL compact camera. For the unitiated, the DL series was supposed to launch in 2016, but it was quietly and unceremoniously canceled before any unit was shipped. And now, it appears that Nikon is keen on taking a chance with it again.

The report suggests that Nikon will introduce a new, refreshed version of the camera, with the original DL 18-50 and DL 24-85mm lenses. Or they, may consolidate them into a single 24-70mm lens. Some of the other details also include a 24MP 1-inch sensor, which will be a bump from the original 20MP camera. The new compact camera will also come with a leather camera case, while the external smart shoe EVF “will be sold separately.” The stacked sensor design will certainly help to enhance the low-light performance of the cameras, as well as its speed. In fact, the Nikon DL will, if the specs are true, compete with the aging Sony RX100 VII and Canon G7X III compact cameras.
Nikon canceled the original camera in 2017 due to the “integrated circuit for image processing,” and how it can further lead to concerns about profits, given that other brands were already introducing improved products. However, the cancellation did upset a lot of photographers, who were keen on a compact offering with three different lens options. The revival of point-and-shoots, today, changes that. The Ricoh GR IV, Fujifilm X100VI, Sony RX1R III are some models that have performed well in the market. In fact, some older cameras, including Nikon’s Coolpix A, are finding new buyers.
Since the introduction of this news, there is genuine excitement but also skepticism. The latter is mostly to do with the size of the sensor. A 1-inch sensor is not suitable for most serious photographers, and it appears that it is not too different than higher-end smartphones for them. As a result, some are pushing for at least APS-C sensors, which will make premium compact camera buyers happier. Some others have also added that models such as the Sony RX1R III, Fujifilm GFX100RF, and Leica Q3 are also selling well because of their full-frame sensors.
The comments only point out that photographers want more details, but inside a small, weather-resistant body. And if Nikon adds its Flexible Color Picture Control feature, then those who use JPEGs will get the best results in-camera with ease. After all, a compact camera is designed to cater to those who want to spend less time at the editing table.
Can a Nikon DL work in 2026? A resounding yes. What Nikon needs to keep in mind is the features and how they are being positioned. Nikon hasn’t introduced a premium compact camera in the current market, which means there will be buyers of such a device. Look at the success of the Nikon P1100. If the camera is under $1500, then there will be more buyers.
Since the original camera was canceled, the timing of the new model is of the utmost importance. The window for compact cameras is open right now, but it won’t stay the same forever.
