When it comes to choosing cameras, compact cameras are by far the most evocative technology today. With many young and older generation of photographers (re)discovering these antique pieces of tech, we have devices to take a peak at the ones that are now older than 15 years. Here are some models worth your time even today.
Panasonic ZS-7

The Panasonic ZS-7 is a compact camera that houses a Leica 25 to 300mm lens, and a 12.1 MP 1/2.33-inch sensor. The biggest selling point is the use of GPS, which works even when the camera is turned off. The lens offers a decent digital zoom, and given how old it is, it is better to shoot still objects in low light. The autofocus is sharp, and is pretty ideal if you wish to slow down and shoot. Other than that, the image quality is nice and offers punchy colors, and the camera is ideal if you wish to ditch your phone. It is sleek, and easy to carry around. As we said, the PZ-7 is “a very solid camera for spring break or summer vacation.”
Leica V-LUX 20

Leica has introduced some wonderful cameras over the years and the V-LUX 20 is a great venture into compact cameras. It is based on Panasonic’s ZS-1, and offers a 12MP sensor and a 24x zoom lens. Handling wise, the V-LUX offers the same exact button placement as the ZS-1, and it feels quite compact as well. The device is pocketable, and the grip at the front makes it easy to work with the device. The focus also works well in good lighting, but one must not expect the performance of a mirrorless device. Given it’s price, you are getting a Leica for much cheaper value, which is ideal for those who like the brand and aspire to buy it.
Canon S95

Canon has some wonderful compact cameras and the S95 is one such device. Launched in 2010, it offers a 10MP 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor, paired with a 28-140mm lens. We retested the camera today, and we realized that the autofocus works well, and the battery lasts long enough. The photos are good for posting online, and the colors are quite nice. As long as you don’t pixel-peep, you will be fine. The S95 is a small luxurious camera, which has two adjustable rings and a lens ring for an enhanced shooting experience. With in-camera HDR makes it easy to make striking images. As we added, “With its great controls, solid image quality and surprisingly good high ISO performance, the Canon PowerShot S95 is a great second camera for photography enthusiasts.”
Fujifilm X100

Fujifilm X100 is the beginning of the popular series, and offers the best results. The first compact in the series, which offers a 12MP APS-C camera with a 35mm lens. The model has a rangefinder design, has a nice metal design, and “autofocus system that is similar to those found in Micro Four Thirds cameras and point and shoots.” In bright light, it is quick and easy to work with. But by today’s standards, it may seem slower. The device also offers lovely image quality, with great dynamic range and color depth. The noise is also controlled well, and you can get some interesting results.
Leica D-LUX 5

Another Leica model, D-Lux 5 offers a 10 MP 1/1.63-inch sensor and a 24-90mm f2 to f3.3 lens. The model has a nice simple front design, has a nice pop-up flash, and most buttons are at the top of the camera. The compact camera also offers good autofocus, and works well even in low light. As we added, “while shooting in the streets at night, the center will still give you the best results.” Similarly, the images are great, and it is similar to shooting at f8 when using a DSLR. The battery is another reason to use it.
