Canon has some of the best lenses in its portfolio. The company has a series that can work across various genres: from weddings to stars to people to insects. Canon, as a manufacturer, has been keen to develop its existing technologies, which include sensors and optics. As part of the latest development, the brand seems to be working on a new macro lens for young photographers. Have a look.
According to Asobinet (via Canon Rumors) patent number P2026090068, which showcases two new RF mirrorless macro lenses: 24mm f1.8 and 35mm f1.8 Macro. Here are the new designs:
Example 1
- Focal length: 31.43
- F-number: 1.85
- Half-Angle of Traction: 32.47
- Image height: 20.00
- Overall length: 97.33
- Back Focus: 16.03
- Multiplier: -0.5

Example 2
- Focal length: 24.50
- F-number: 1.85
- Half-Field Angle: 39.23
- Image height: 20.00
- Length: 112.45
- Back focus: 2.45
- Multiplier: -0.5

Example 3
- Focal length: 34.80
- F-number: 1.85
- Half-Angle of Tract: 29.88
- Image height: 20.00
- Length: 119.33
- Back Focus: 23.25
- Multiplier: -0.5

The patent showcases redesigned lenses, including an RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM. The Canon patent reveals an internal focus, which can help with balance and long-term durability. There is also a 40mm image circle, and the focus system has been redesigned, making it ideal for STM motors.
The lens is said to have a Fluorine coating alongside Canon’s Air Sphere Coating (ASC) to combat flare and ghosting. Macro performance stays at 1:2, and image stabilization remains on board.
So, what is the catch? The size. The design is slightly larger at 62.8mm-long. The 34.80mm version will be about 100mm long, while the 32.43mm will have the same size as the current version, but with internal focusing.
Since the announcement, people have revealed that a lens of this nature can help. Some will sell their current 35mm macro for one with a faster AF lens. Some are looking for a higher end lens in this range. But there are also some who would rather prefer a 35mm pancake lens from the company. Some want a different focal length, such as a 50mm 1:1 macro.
A new 35mm f1.8 Macro II will be more than an incremental refresh. This would also showcase the company’s commitment to entry-level topics, especially since they are already creating L-series lenses. However, it also raises questions about how the new lens can offer internal focus, improved coatings, faster AF, without the L-series price. In addition to macro photography, a 35mm can be used for daily shooting, street and travel photography.
The current 35mm Macro, which was launched in 2019, is a fantastic performer. As we said in our review:
The Canon RF 35mm f1.8 USM IS is a lens that photographers will pick up if they’re looking for a good 35mm lens for the Canon system that has image stabilization. In addition to that the image quality is also very sharp for what it is.
Patent applications do not always mean a guaranteed product. But with two separate filings so far of the same RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM, it is a possibility that we may get something soon. Until then, let’s wait and watch.
