At the height of the charmera craze late last year, I gave in and purchased a non-Kodak branded version from AliExpress. It brought me an immense amount of joy – even if the images it produced weren’t the greatest. Since I made that purchase, I’ve been wondering aloud if the world really needs another charmera; well, Yashica has responded with not one but four variants of their ultra-compact keychain camera – the Yashica Funtastic. Grab your wallets and let’s see what makes these worth adding to your collection.
Yashica Funtastic – Fantastic Fun for any Photographer

The Yashica Funtastic is built around the idea that by making photography feel lightheared, joyful, spontaneous, and downright fun, it will become a part of your daily life. The line of Funtastic is a tiny camera – weighing a mere 22 grams and 2.5×0.8×0.9 inches – this is as much designed to be a testament to your personal style and personality as it is a device to capture images.
Beyond its tiny, uh, charm, the Yashica Funtastic collection comes in four iconic editions that will surely match your own personal style. There’s the Classic Hello Kitty Edition in a red and cream colorway. Two Snoopy Editions including a Summit Edition in green with the iconic beagle in his camping gear best, and a “Sweet Dreams” Edition in a funky yellow and orange feature Mr. Joe Cool himself. Rounding out the set is the Yashica Boy Edition featuring a Japanese-inspired design featuring a sailor mascot against a bright blue color scheme with red highlights. The entire set is highly collectible – no matter what your interests might be.
Serious Photographers Need More Joy

At The Phoblographer, we often cover the very pinnacle of imaging technology made for professional photographers and enthusiasts. You might say that we write serious reviews and articles for a very serious and discerning audience – you, dear reader. But just like we love to work hard at our craft, it’s equally crucial that we all make time to pursue the things that bring us unadulterated joy. The Yashica Funtastic collection is a simple 1-megapixel, ¼-inch sensor camera that could never compete with the most entry-level full-frame camera, and it shouldn’t. From the sample photos provided by Yashica, this is a camera that’s full of flaws, but in these flaws you might be able to truly tap into your own creative energy and sharpen your visual identity in a way that more clinical cameras simply can’t.
If the public’s response to these cute cameras is anything like their reaction to the Kodak Charmera, you can expect the Yashica Funtastic to be a conversation starter and head-turner. Photography can be isolating at times – with you often hidden behind a lens or viewfinder. The Funtastic by contrast invites those around you to become part of a shared experience in making the frame. In a world where the conversation around photography seems to be dominated by what is (or isn’t) made by AI, isn’t nice to add some humanity back to the medium?
The Yashica Funtastic is available now for pre-order directly from Yashica and prices start at around $25 USD.
