Canon has some wonderful lenses for their mirrorless photographers. While the company is still developing and introducing newer models, it appears that some focal ranges will get a better chance than others. This includes a new 20-50mm, an odd focal length that has a chance to see the light of day. Have a look.
According to Canon Rumors, users will reportedly see the launch of 20-50mm f4L IS USM PZ, which is likely to be launched with a new camera on May 13. This is a power zoom lens, this is designed for video use primarily, and has the same focus architecture found in the RF-S 14-30mm f4-6.3 IS STM PZ. Here are some details:
- Focal Length: 20-50mm
- Aperture: F4 constant
- Zoom Type: Power zoom (PZ) with internal focus
- Rings: 3 (two assignable to aperture)
- Additional Buttons: Fn button + unconfirmed second button (possibly auto IRIS)
- Aperture Ring: None
- Image Stabilization: Yes (IS)
- Grade: L-series
- Announcement Date: May 13, 2026
- Price: Unknown
The lens will be the same physical size as the RF 24-105mm f4L IS USM. But at the same time, instead of 24mm to 20mm, this is a significant jump to the wider side. There are also three rings, one function (Fn) button and a second button that is similar to the one found on Canon’s VCM prime lenses above the IRIS switch. This also means that we may get an IRIS switch, too.
While the price is unknown, there is also a concern: If the zoom ring mimics the rocker-style servo zoom, many photographers will be frustrated. So, one hopes that the zoom ring functions as a traditional zoom ring with variable speed control. The latter can give photographers a tactile feel.
A lens of this nature has not yet been created by Canon RF, or any other brand. Sony has a 20-70mm f4 G series, which helps to be a perfect everyday lens for many photographers. In that sense, a 20-50mm can be of help to many young photographers. This means it can help with landscaping but also portraits, and interiors. For hybrid photographers, the lens sits in a pretty impressive place, since it can help to create cinematic zoom pulls.
Other brands, such as Nikon and Panasonic, offer 24-50mm f4-6.3 and 20-60mm f3.5-5.6, with Tamron offering a 20-40mm f2.8. A constant aperture for Canon f4 makes it the closest spiritual rival is Sony’s 20-70mm, but the PZ makes it more demanding for most.
When paired with the EOS R8 and R6, the 20-50mm f4L, the lens will be ideal for many full-frame photographers. If they have a weather seal and the same performance as other L-series lenses, then many Canon enthusiasts will use it for their everyday shoots. Power zooms are not for every photographer, so it remains to be seen if photographers will accept it.
