For a while now, Nikon has been in a lawsuit with Viltrox over not paying a licensing fee to make lenses for the Nikon Z camera system. That move has majorly annoyed many photographers. And in private circles, Nikon reps have been telling folks that they will be doing a “scorched earth” approach to Viltrox. So in a similar fashion that they did to RED, Nikon is agreeing to acquire Viltrox after this lawsuit.
This could potentially now make Nikon an even more powerful company. With a full cinema division due to the RED acquision, Nikon will now have their own real lens production plants and manufacturer. For years, they’d been relying on Tamron and Sigma to make lenses for them instead. However, Viltrox did that all on their own without any help from the Japanese.
But this is where things get even more fascinating: Viltrox makes lenses for various camera mounts and is a member of the Leica L-mount alliance.
So does that mean that Nikon is joining the L-mount alliance too?

Additionally, what about all of the other accessories that Viltrox makes such as their M to Sony E mount adapter with autofocus and so much more? Perhaps it might mean that Nikon finally makes good flashes again as well.
This is going to be quite a fascinating move as we haven’t seen a camera manufacturer purchase a lens maker since Sony partially purchased Tamron.
