When Nikon launched the Nikon ZR, they made a camera that is close to what real photographers have been asking for for a while. What am I talking about? Well, many of us have wanted something like the Nikon S model of rangefinder cameras. And with the Nikon Z lineup of lenses, it only makes sense that they would do it. Nikon has already made the Nikon Zf, and they could do something similar with the ZR. However, we’re most likely going to see an APS-C version before we see a full-frame version. And the internals are all bound to be what we’ve been seeing from Nikon for years.
With all this in mind, I predict that we’re going to see a Nikon ZRS of some sort within the next four years. The big camera brands move way too slowly and they never plan on changing even if it hurts their sales.
If the Nikon ZRS comes, then it should be made of metal. And it should be something beyond just a camera with an EVF. The ZRS should keep a mechanical shutter for the vintage aesthetic. It should also have something like a hybrid viewfinder the way the Fujifilm X Pro and Pixi camera has. I think that’s very important to making the whole thing work for photographers who really want an authentic experience.
Nikon already has a few vintage aesthetic lenses, but they could make even more. For example, the Nikon 26mm f2.8 could easily lend itself to that. And when paired with a rangefinder style camera, it would be something that photographers would simply love to take around with them.
Nikon, please make this.
The watch industry evolved to be something that was all about the aesthetic and the experience. But the Japanese camera brands at all more or less running the same experience. We truly need something different if the camera market is going to survive and evolve.
Hopefully they also find a way to make it more tailored towards being a stills-camera instead of something meant for shooting video. And when I say, “they find” I mean that they should look back into their history. Companies like Nikon tend to largely reject their history and say that those older products aren’t worth it anymore. But the truth is that they never stopped being good.
In 2026, cameras and photography isn’t about the technology anymore. It’s about how you can make something unique and have an experience.
