Understanding how the Exposure Triangle works is one of the most important things to tick off your to-do list if you’re just starting out with photography. We can’t stress that enough, so we’re sharing yet another video tutorial on the topic. This one is a fun and visually engaging take on the topic: we’re sure you’ll pay attention!
The video below was shared to us by Melbourne-based French content creator Nicolas Doretti. He combined his expertise in photography, video, and motion design to put together a fun tutorial to help beginners understand the Exposure Triangle. As a great visual analogy, Doretti likened the aperture to a tap that can be opened to let in more light. The water that flows through the tap stands for the amount of available light. How long the tap is kept open stands for the shutter speed. Lastly, how big the glass represents the ISO or sensitivity of your camera’s sensor (or film, if you’re still shooting with it). The task of the photographer, as he explains in the details about each component, is to find a balance for all the settings to produce a well-exposed and pleasing picture. This is what the Exposure Triangle is all about. Doretti also raises an interesting philosophical question: when do you consider the “glass” full? Or, in photographer speak, when do you consider a photograph to be properly exposed, given that the “rules” can be subjective and results are subject to personal taste? That’s one of the things you’re bound to discover once you put these concepts to work.
