We spent a lot of time playing with the new Canon RF 50mm f1.2 L USM lens. Here are some of our recent favorite sample images.
Hey folks,
This post is pretty literally just a massive gallery of photos that we’ve shot using the new Canon RF 50mm f1.2 L USM. Be sure to also check out why we love it for portraits.
Our thoughts so far:
- We like the fact that the lens is weather sealed.
- The bokeh is super creamy.
- Canon seems to have added a bit of micro-contrast to the lens but not in the way that Tamron, Rokinon, and Zeiss do it.
- The rendering is pretty on par with Sony’s 85mm f1.4 G Master lens.
- It’s a big lens.
- The autofocus is pretty fast.
- At f1.2 the lens is very sharp but when stopped down it becomes even better.
- It’s hard to justify getting a lens that is f1.2 and then using a flash and stopping the aperture down. But the results are still very sharp.
- This is a lens that portrait photographers interested in the Canon EOS R will reach for.
- The lens makes the sensor and the camera system sing. The camera itself? Not as much.
- The rendering looks a lot like German lenses and doesn’t look like a Japanese made lens when you compare it to the standards of many other manufacturers.
- Using this lens with a flash (the bath tub scenes) makes the output sing.
- Using this lens you can keep the high ISO output on the Canon EOS R down. And that’s good because at ISO 1600 it starts to show a bit more noise than I’d like. But the files still look nice overall.
- Canon’s face detection is just okay with the Canon RF 50mm f1.2 L USM. But it can surely be better and probably will be with firmware updates. You’re best off using the manual focus point adjustment option.
