Cactus Adds Nikon TTL support to their X-TTL, cross-platform TTL technology
When Cactus first launched their X-TTL technology a while back they made the interesting decision to start it with support for Fujifilm, Sigma, and Sony; not the traditional powerhouse TTL technologies of Nikon and Canon. Well, they have since added Pentax and Panasonic/Olympus support, and that left only Canon and Nikon still unsupported by the technology; until today, with Cactus announcing the availability of X-TTL compatibility with Nikon.
For those who don’t know what this is; X-TTL is Cactus’s technology that allows them to take the TTL information of any supported camera system and convert it to the TTL ‘language’ of any other supported camera system TTL language. Basically, this allows you to (in theory anyway) fire Sony speedlights using the TTL functionality on your Fujifilm camera. Now, with the Nikon update, users can fire TTL compatible Nikon speedlights with their Sony, Fujifilm, or any other supported manufacturers camera.
This is what some may call a great equalizer of sorts. Forever, basically, if you wanted to take full advantage of the TTL capabilities on your camera you had to buy into that company’s offering of speedlights, that or purchase third-party options with TTL support. But the problem always arose that, if you ever decided to switch systems, you would be stuck having to purchase new speedlights in order to take advantage of the TTL functionality in that new system.
If you never changed systems, this wouldn’t really be a problem for you, however, now thanks to Cactus, you can switch systems, or simply share gear, and still be able to have full TTL control of whatever branded speedlights you have.
