Photographer Matt Porteous is a lifestyle photographer, and considering some of the latest evolutions of the genre and photography, it only makes sense that he’s been using some of the latest drones from DJI. Now, there are lots of drone photographers out there, but much of what makes Matt’s work so special is his specific color palette in addition to the simply gorgeous views and compositions he uses. When you look at his images, you also get a sense of his use of positive and negative space. Plus, there’s a whole lot of beautiful symmetry in his images.
To capture the photos, Matt used a DJI Phantom Pro and Mavic Pro. According to Matt, he took a winter journey to some of the most beautiful places on earth. The photos are of Austria, Hawaii and the Bahamas. There’s something for both the winter cold lover and those who appreciate the sun kissing their skin. The images surely take a lot of interesting experimentation since photographers don’t usually go up from vantages like this, so they don’t exactly have a bird’s eye view all the time. Instead, they’ll need to take a guess. These drones have the ability to transmit what they see to the photographer though, so sometimes it’s a matter of moving around, getting the exposure right and capturing the right moment.
On top of that, you often need to consider things like the wind. Oh yeah, and you need to be a skilled drone pilot.
Artistically speaking, when you look at Matt’s photos you get the sense that you’re looking down at some sort of interactive map or you’re in one of those top-down video games. There’s a whole lot to love here with his compositions; and it’s almost like the Earth made it easy for him 😉
More of Matt’s work can be found on Behance. And I highly suggest heading over. It’s a treat!
