This New Voigtlander Telephoto Lens Focuses Closer Than Ever

Third-party lenses have been some of the best options for many young and senior photographers. Voigtlander, owned by Cosina, makes some fantastic options for Leica users. This includes the newly launched telephoto lens that can do a lot for portrait photographers. Have a look.

The lens in question is the APO-LANTHAR 90mm f4 close focus, one that was announced during the CP+ 2026. The lens has a manual focus, built for the Leica M system, and is set to launch in 20216.

The ‘APO’ features an apochromatic optical design, which helps to minimize chromatic aberration across the color spectrum. The lens comes with a close 0.5-meter minimum focusing distance, which is designed for rangefinder-mount cameras. The lens offers a dedicated metal hood, it uses a full-frame image circle, and it is small.

As a rangefinder lens, it offers manual focus only, has a rangefinder interlock (coupling) system, and also offers a click-stop aperture ring.

The Voigtlander 110mm f2.5 almost finds the perfect balance between classic and modern. It looks fantastic with a classically-inspired metal build. While the lens is not too fast, the 90mm is incredibly small for its size. The close focusing distance is also a meaningful upgrade for rangefinder shooters, since M-mount telephotos have historically been limited by rangefinder mechanics to focusing no closer than roughly 0.7-1m. In other words, the lens can be perfect for anyone shooting products, macro, and portraits from close focusing distance.

If you are a photographer who needs a cheap lens, then this one is an option you can choose. Other options also include APO-Skopar 90mm f2.8 VM, TTArtisan 90mm f1.25, and Leica Summicron 90mm f2, amongst others. But they are also expensive and can be large.
