Panasonic has a brand that offers some great cameras and lenses. The company has been able to bridge the gap for truly hybrid cameras, and they have been quite successful. Now, as part of the expansion of their lens portfolio, the company is keen on introducing a new lens that will make things easy for macro photographers. Have a look.
According to a newly introduced patent (via Asobinet), the company has spoken about patent P2026104790, which showcases a lens structure with a switching ring. The ring controls the lens in three states: a retracted storage position, a normal shooting mode, and a macro shooting mode. Here is a look at its design:

According to the patent, the innovation has a mode-switch that helps to drive the lens along the optical axis. When retracted, the lens will pull back, towards the camera. Then, when shooting, the lens will extend to the standard shooting position. For the macro mode, you have to twist the ring again. Each position has a different distance scale, ensuring that photographers get an accurate focus.
Conventional macro lenses maintain their full extended length, even when not in use. This can be kind of inconvenient to carry. A collapsible lens can be stored easily, and especially for those photographers who carry their gear in smaller bags. Or, when they wish to carry lite.
While Panasonic’s patent is unique, there have been some model lenses that do offer that. Nikon has a retractable kit lens, such as Z 24-50mm f4-6.3 and Z 26mm f2.8. Canon also offers the same, with
Canon RF-S18-45mm f4.5-6.3. Sony also offers a kit solution with 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 OSS. However, none of them are macro lenses, per se.
Laowa has been pushing the envelope in this domain, with a 65mm f2.8 2x Ultra Macro, which offers a compact build of 100 mm long and weighs 335g. However, this is without any collapsible build.
The other option is LUMIX 100mm f2.8 Macro, which is compact and easy to use. It is the same size as 85mm f1.8, and 50mm f1.8 lenses, which means it can be carried easily. So, Panasonic, if they manage to introduce a lens shorter than 82mm, it will certainly be a breakthrough. After all, the 100mm is a fantastic performer. As we added in our review:
The Lumix 100mm f2.8 Macro lens is one of the fastest-focusing lenses that I’ve seen for the L-mount. If anything, I’d even say it’s the fastest-focusing one around. That lightning-fast speed can also be seen on Leica and Lumix camera bodies.
For L-mount users, this can be a welcome addition. All Panasonic has to do is to do is ensure the lens meets the real-world demands of weather sealing and build quality. However, as it is with patents, there is no guarantee that the design reaches production soon. However, the specificity of the lens reads more like a solution to a problem that the company has been thinking about.
