Leica is known for creating fabulous cameras that can stand the test of time. The M series has been loved by professional photographers, and it continues to be an important addition for many. It now appears that the company is expanding the M11 series, with a new model that can be a bit cost-effective.
Additional input was provided by Editor in Chief Chris Gampat.
First reported by Leica Rumors, the camera is said to be M11-R, which could come this year or early 2027. This could be a strategic release in recent history, as it is poised to be a bridge camera and a more accessible entry point into Leica M.
The report states that the M11-R will come with a 60MP resolution, like the current M11. The R stands for resolution, with the first camera being the M10-R launching in 2020. While the M10-R bump was visible, the M11-R won’t chase that. The change lies in the sensor design, which is supposed to be the same as the upcoming M12. The M11-R will be the real-world test before it is deployed on the next flagship.

The M11-R is also said to have a large LCD, which will be a massive change that will require rethinking of the rear layout. There is also the chance that the camera could remove physical buttons in favor of a touch screen. The images of the prototype also showcase two designs: one without any buttons and one with two buttons. And the M11-R could bring this to the forefront in production. The M series is known for its tactical controls, so letting that go can only divide people.
For a brand whose customers have historically prized physical, tactile controls, a full touchscreen rear could result in a divisive community.

The M10-R was priced over $6,000 while the M11 is over $10,000. Both show a significant difference in price; one is 40MP and 60MP. If the M11-R follows a different price range, one that is lower than the M11 because of the same resolution of sensor, then the M11-R becomes the most attractive entry points into the high-resolution Leica M system.

This isn’t the first time that Leica has done some sort of more affordable variant though. Leica already has the Leica M-EV1 camera that forgoes the rangefinder for an EVF. That camera is pretty small and with the right lens, can even fit into a pocket. Back in 2019, we reported on the Leica M-E, which was a more affordable version of the Leica M Typ 240. To quote an article we wrote, “The new Leica M-E is priced well below the older Leica M (Typ 240) which rang up for $5,995,” we stated. “The new Leica M-E will be priced at $3,995, which makes it the new entry point to the Leica M Rangefinder platform.” Even in today’s money and inflation, that’s still quite an unheard of deal for a Leica M.
If you read between the lines, the M11-R is trying to serve on multiple levels. While Leica gets the chance to test the next-generation sensor and interface technology, it will also refresh the M11 lineup with new upgrades. It also gives Leica a strong mid-cycle product that can give the company a year or two window before the M12 is launched. For now, it remains to be seen what Leica finally introduces. The M11-R could certainly be the device photogrpahers been waiting for.
