Canon’s EF lens lineup has been nothing short of innovative. The company has created some spectacular master pieces such as Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS II USM, EF 24-70mm f2.8L II USM, and EF 400mm f2.8L IS II USM. With the company’s move to mirrorless, we really have not seen too many new lenses, but there is always the promise of Canon launching something different every year. It has now come to our attention that the manufacturer is working on a new zoom lens, which could showcase Canon‘s commitment to its loyal customers.
The Mysterious Canon Zoom Lens
According to Canon Rumors, Canon is working on its next big lens, which will be a zoom that has “never been seen before.” The report comes from a trusted source, who revealed that it may not be the next “big white” telephoto lens seen in the L series. The focal range is designed for more “general use,” and it will likely be between 16-135mm.

Although no other detail has been revealed, one wonders whether this will be the long-awaited alternative to RF 28-70mm f2.8L USM. Sony has already announced a competing lens in this range, which is far lighter and affordable, which indicates that Canon must be under pressure to have its own variant. A new RF 24-70mm f2 or f1.8 could help photographers who are into landscapes, street photography, architecture, events, and weddings. It may also suit some travel photographers as well.
While 24mm may seem a short increase to some, it makes it challenging from an engineering perspective since to has this focal range along with a wide open aperture. And if the lens is compact and lightweight, then Canon would have hit the soft spot for many users. Although the report doesn’t specify if it’s for a full-frame camera or an APS-C. A full frame seems more on the mark for the company since they are not producing too many new lenses for RF-S. Instead, it appears Sigma will help the company with the latter.
Why This Could Be Huge
Since July is a slow month, and looking at the company’s history last year, the new lens could fall into the Q4 of the year. For instance, the Canon R1 was announced in November, which is the flagship device from the company. Similarly, a never-seen-before lens could also take the spotlight in November, during the holiday season.

At the moment, Canon already has a 24-70mm f2.8, which is already an excellent option for many. However, it has been over five years since it was announced, and so a new lens has to come close to the performance of the former beast. In our review, we did not feel the lens had any shortcomings, which means Canon is only competing with its own excellence.
While Sony, Sigma, and Tamron are making new waves, Canon will have to push. One way will be by increasing bright apertures, such as announcing a 24-50mm f1.8, which hasn’t been done before due to the complexity of the lens and its elements. Leica already has the 24-70mm f2.8 SL, and Sony has its own 24-70mm f2.8 G Master II, both of which are excellent performers. So, the only way to beat them is by making a lens that is different than others. Otherwise, Canon risks losing the professionals and serious enthusiasts to other brands. So, if the company is ready to shake things up, it is better that they do so after multiple tests, because no one wants a device that lacks. There are already too many third-party manufacturers who have an incredible and cost-effective portfolio. Until then, we have to wait until September to hear more.
