Another day, another report from Canon is here. The last time we heard anything about Canon Speedlite, it was the discontinuation of the EL-100, the company’s mid-range offering for smaller cameras. Moreover, there are also some issues with the EL-1, the company’s premium offering for full-frame cameras. Amidst this, there is probably an exciting whisper for Canon fans, which could mean a lot for those looking to purchase a new Speedlite.
Canon Will Reportedly Launch a New Speedlite
In our previous article, we mentioned how Canon is encountering an issue with Speedlite EL-1 related to a “supply chain issue.” This was revealed to us by Canon U.S.A. Inc. in an official statement following our query about the product’s discontinuation in Japan. Even now, when you log in to Canon U.S.A’s website, you see the option to “notify” the consumer. It’s unclear by when the Speedlite will be restocked, but it is safe to say it is not any time soon.
However, amidst this, Canon Rumors has alleged that it is working on a new “hybrid” speedlite, which will be announced soon. It could be “as early as” November, but nothing has been confirmed. The details, as usual, are scarce.
The author learned that Canon’s Speedlite is now focused on both photography and stills and is likely to have “new features” that weren’t disclosed. The article also highlights that the Speedlite will not be gimmicky and useful for photographers.
Furthermore, when Canon launched the mirrorless mount, many of their speedlites took a while to reach the market. With EL-1 facing a shortage, the chances of its delay are higher, too. In another report, Canon Rumors quoted Canon Japan, who recalled Speedlite EL-5 due to power issues. The issue was with the battery, which was depleting despite the product being turned off. Fortunately, Canon Japan identified the issue and is ready to repair it for free until the end of September.
Canon User Voice Their Demands
Canon has been battling the surge of photography accessories for a while now. In the Speedlite sphere, they are also set against Profoto, Elinchrom, and Chinese manufacturers like Godox and Yongnuo. In our review, the EL-1 was versatile and strong but also came with a hefty price tag of a thousand dollars and a huge design.
So, now the question remains: How will Canon compete with them, especially if it hopes to gain customer favor? For starters, the hybrid light needs to be strong enough to be useful for photography. As both mediums require different levels of light power, it remains a mystery how Canon will balance the two without stepping on either user’s toes.
At the same time, some users also noted in the comments that they need better control over the modeling lamp, as they have been experiencing it turning off during the use of the flash. And, of course, an enhanced hot shoe support can support USB connections for diverse needs. The hybrid shooters, however, hope that the newly reported speedlite gives better access to microphones and receivers, with lighting equipment on cameras. Users desire a multi-accessory shoe that allows for easy branching, similar to. Some also argue that an LP-E6P battery could help with a higher current flow. Moreover, a Bluetooth or WiFi transmission mode over the use of radio can also be a big deal for some.
The news of an alleged Canon speedlite has excited many users, especially those who want to be loyal to the company. It remains to be seen when their wishes come true.
