Often, emerging photographers find it challenging to fund their long-term projects. While various grants are available today, sometimes they are limited to one or two individuals. So, what happens to the remaining? But, there are instances where a conglomerate decides to fund the arts, opening up opportunities for not just one or two photographers but over 20 artists. An example of this is the 2024 Creator Labs Photo Fund, which recently supported a diverse range of photographers.

Creator Labs Photo Fund—An Exceptional Beginning
The initiative is the brainchild of Google’s Creator Labs and Aperture, which was first integrated in 2021. Now, in its third annual edition, the Creator Labs Photo Fund is still working on its commitment—to help find financial support for artists still in the early stages of their careers. The winners, which are a total of 30 individuals, will each receive a one-time grant of $6,000, along with a Google Pixel. Each winner is a photographer and a len-based artist who comes from various walks of life.
Here’s a list of the Creator Labs Photo Fund winners:

Mary Kang focuses on the traditions of Korean military wives to provide a sensitive portrayal amidst stereotypes. There is Morganne Boulden, who blends his narrative with larger cultural discourse following the pandemic in America.
Why New Photographers Must Get A Larger Platform
Creator Labs Photo Fund is adding new layers to our saturated medium. In a world driven by AI algorithms, finding a breakthrough in the early stages is often very challenging. That’s where a distinct portal comes in, enabling talented emerging artists to showcase their craft. New voices, especially in the artistic spheres, are crucial. They challenge the usual norm, urging viewers to think differently. They also change photography trends, which may have been set by their predecessors.
In addition, emerging artists, especially from marginalized backgrounds, enrich the visual arts. Once they are past the gatekeeping, new photographers could revive our love for the medium, not only for photographers but even those who casually skip through the pages of National Geographic at a newsstand.
While we are talking about emerging talents, it is equally crucial that the winners of the Creator Labs Photo Fund get the opportunity to showcase their winning works in public spaces once their projects have concluded. With such a small but essential step, photography may also gradually be seen as an art form in diverse communities. Perhaps it could also help a new generation of creative thinkers to use the medium in their practice. Nobody has seen tomorrow, but initiatives at grassroots levels today will create meaningful ripples of transformation for a better future.
