Photography trade shows used to be one of the most exciting times of the year for people in the industry. This is where innovation and technology would inspire veterans and new generations of photographers about the medium. It was also a time for the community to come together for a meaningful discourse. However, in recent years, these events have become a farce, with more prominent trade shows like Photokina indefinitely suspending its operation. This leaves one wondering: how will camera manufacturers like Leica, Sony, Canon, or Nikon announce their latest devices to the masses?
Well, it seems the gap left by photography is being filled with trade shows pertaining to larger technological feats in other industries. According to a report by Canon Rumors, the next great event is the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) 2024 in Amsterdam. What makes this one different is that IBC’s focus is the “global media, entertainment, and technology industry,” meaning photography would play a small but crucial role. Moreover, the report also highlights that Canon could be a part of the occasion with its own announcements from September 13 to 16.
Canon at the IBC Trade Show
Since IBC focuses on larger broadcasting areas, Canon has made multiple announcements, ranging from professional cinema to video cameras, an extended PTZ camera range, compact vlogging cameras, and even professional VR. However, the occasion is also perfect for revealing photography-related equipment. For instance, last year, Canon unveiled its RF mount lenses and the CR-N100 4K PTZ camera.

This year, however, some of the devices rumored to be at the Canon booth include Cinema EOS C400, Canon EOS R1, and EOS R5 Mk II, and a few videography-based gears for the RF mount. The launch of EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mk II has received its fair share of doubts from the photo community. Moreover, there is also the hope that Canon allows photographers to get their hands on the EOS R1, which could give us some insight into the device.
Reported Lenses at IBC
Furthermore, with IBC, there is also the possibility of a few revelations in the lens department. According to Canon Rumors, the company may unveil the RF 24mm F1.4L VCM, the RF 50mm F1.4L VCM, the RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM Z, and a new cinema lens. While nothing has been confirmed yet, one hopes to see the devices soon. The rumor claimed that they would be revealed in September, making IBC a great location to do so.

Earlier this month, it was declared that following the success of the hybrid RF 35mm F1.4L VCM, the company plans to extend its range with two new editions. The 24mm is a great wide-angle option, with the 50mm serving best for portrait work for both photos and videos. As for the 70-200mm, we reported earlier that if the lens is revealed next month, it is obvious that Canon is focusing on expanding its video line-up more.
Furthermore, VR seems to be a great deal for the company, as they propel technology in every area. The manufacturer already announced the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye and the RF-S 7.8mm F4 STM dual lens for spatial video. Reports of new firmware updates are also generating buzz, but what Canon finally announces remains to be seen.
