LaCie has long been a popular brand among photographers for their rugged external hard drives capable of taking a beating while protecting our data out in the field. CES 2017 is this week and like many tech companies LaCie has some new announcements, along with a new partner, so lets get into the news.
Starting from the top, the new LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt USB-C drives will feature up to 5TB of storage in their max configuration. The units will have the same rugged build that has made LaCie so popular among photographers, but as a new addition the drives will now feature Seagate drives. In addition there will also be a 1TB SSD model which will have speeds of up to 510MB/s, which LaCie is touting as around 30% faster than their previous generation.
The new LaCie Rugged drive will come in 2TB, 4TB and 5TB HDD and 500GB and 1TB SSD variants starting at $249.99. They are expected to be available later this quarter (by the end of March).
In addition to the new Rugged drives, LaCie announced their new D2, a fast Thunderbolt-3 desktop drive designed to easily add up to 10TB of additional storage to SDD limited laptops and all-in-one computers that are not easily upgradeable in the storage department. The new D2 will also feature Seagate 7200 RPM hard drives and should cap out at around 240MB/s – so not slow, but not exactly blazing fast either.
The new LaCie d2 drive will come in 6TB, 8TB and 10TB variations starting at $429.99, and it is also expected to begin shipping at some point this quarter.
