Amsterdam based photographer, Jeroen Nieuwhuis, of New Day Studio, has completed a compelling personal project entitled People of Cuba. The 16 image portrait series captures people Nieuwhuis and his colleagues met during their recent trip to Cuba. The residents were kind enough to give them a glimpse into their lives with subjects including farmers, cigar makers, boxers, and various other denizens met along the way.
Combining artificial and natural light, the subjects are beautifully lit and captured in both posed and candid fashion. The resulting portraits are moody and evoke a sense of life and emotion unique to the subject photographed. Some of the images are also accompanied with a caption giving viewers more information about the individual(s). Nieuwhuis photographed the series with a Leaf Credo 40 digital back paired with a Schneider LS 80mm lens giving his photographs striking details and depth-of-field; the people seem to jump off the page. Check out the series below.
