Canon Files Patent for New EF 300mm f2.8L IS Lens

Things are really heating up lately in terms of lens offerings from all the top manufacturers. According to Canon Rumors, Canon has recently filed a patent for a new EF 300mm f/2.8L IS Lens. Initially just a rumor, the website had posted previously that the lens was well into development and this latest patent filing seems to confirm their findings. 

Below are the specs as outlined by Patent Publication No. 2016-173439

  • Filing date 2015.3.17
  • Focal length 292.46
  • F-number 2.91
  • Angle of view 4.23
  • Image height 21.64
  • Overall length of the lens 273.95
  • BF 60.81

Today, for some odd reason, the Nikon P1000 point and shoot camera is being announced. Odd, you ask? The fact that it is a point and shoot isn’t such a big issue at all; but the fact that it’s a superzoom camera being marketed as one with a 125x optical zoom is what’s insane. Kudos to Nikon for being able to do something like this; but then you read the fine print (or in this case, print that’s not even in the press release) and see the bait and switch–this Nikkor lens is having its potential wasted by being placed in front of a 1/2.3 inch sensor.
