Recently we took a stab at Sony and now the news recently has been ablaze with Nikon news. The latest is a statement by Eye-Fi stating that there is an issue with the direct mode feature when pairing it with a Nikon D800. First of all, why did it take this long for the problem to be discovered? I can’t say that I disagree but I just wanted to share my opinion on the issue. I have only used my Eye-Fi card with the D800 but my experience with it has been quite frustrating, enough so that it just isn’t a reliable feature or something I foresee using professionally. The most difficult part of the process is the pairing, to simply get the two items start or initiate the first transfer. Once this is done this is where my frustration stops 100%.
I tend to go on night walks and I would use the card to pass images to my iPhone, I don’t do much more than that but I do think its a unique feature that I may one day take advantage of but because of the rocky start that happens in the beginning I have never used it elsewhere. The process of troubleshooting includes these steps in random order, formatting the card, reinstalling the network profile on the iPhone, reinstalling the app, powering off / removing batteries and just removing the Eye-Fi card for a period of time. After a bit of cursing the system just starts to work and it works really well considering the size of the D800 files. I have complaints also about the lack of range that the system gives you but that will be for another day.
I just wanted to share that it does work but only after some patience and troubleshooting. When it works it works great but getting it to this point is where I have had my struggles. If you have any questions let me know. Thank you Nikon Rumors for digging up the dirt.
