My Discontinued D700 Lives On

by Peter Walkowiak on 08/23/2012

Yesterday Nikon officially discontinued my Nikon D700. I have owned her since the first week that she came out in mid 2008. Yes I keep referring to her as her and not an it because like a lot of us who travel alone we become attached. Yesterday, when the announcement happened surprisingly my D700 didn’t just up and die. Today’s modern digital cameras are becoming very similar to yesterdays film cameras. We are at a point where the technology is so good that these items wont become irrelevant after their lifecycle.

I have been viewing Ming Thein’s “Inspirations from an older cameras” series and it reminds me how these cameras will live on as long as we put them to work. If you haven’t seen Ming’s series please take a look here and enjoy browsing.

My D700 is alive and kicking as well, along with my D90!

Im glad to hear it. The D700 still amazes me when I take it out on a casual stroll.

My D700 is looking a little rough but It’s still my main body; backed up with a D7000 and (gasp) a D200.

Oh man… I have shot with the D200 a few times. Decent camera but bad noise at about 800.

So I’m still shooting with a D200 and I’m wondering what would be the appropriate replacement.

I’m a recent D700 owner (sold my beloved D90 and found one used not long after D800 went on sale). It’s been a joy to use and a camera I’m happy to say will be in my bag for a while. Just need a smallish camera for travel/casual use (without giving up too much in function and image quality) and i’m set.

I am thinking about selling my D700 when the rumored 24mp Nikon full frame comes out because I want 2 video cameras… but the part that I would miss dearly / would stop me from selling is the 12mp sensor. I would like a camera that has the ability to take “small” raw files. I miss my D50 dearly and its 5-6mb RAW files…. :(

I’d love to have the extra resolving power (24MP) and extra memory card slot, but not while sacrificing the size (for balance with FF lenses), D3-like focus speed/tracking, and 8fps (with my battery grip) for occasional sports shooting. Of course that’s all based on the rumored specs of the D600.

I’m not big on video personally and would probably be happy with an APS-C or m4/3 mirrorless solution that which would also double as a travel camera.

The OMD honestly looks like a killer but the $1000 dollar market is a very crowded one with a lot of options… I agree with the rest. Its a tricky trade-off

My D700 is not only alive and kicking but also referred to as She

This makes me smile! GO FEMALE CAMERAS!

Nice! I’d actually love a D700 since it takes the same batteries as my D300S.

    • Peter Walkowiak

yah… new batteries are just a hassle, especially when keeping 2 different systems.

Would love to hear your thoughts on getting a D700 vs. D800 vs. D600

I wonder what the real life expectancy of modern DSLR’s really is. Is it purely down to shutter life or is there more to it?

My dad still uses his 40D.
