At this year’s NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) G-Technology is announcing new portable storage solutions. The new Evolution Series features the two-bay docking station with interchangeable and expandable storage units that can be used as true standalone external hard drives. The new G-DRIVE™ PRO with Thunderbolt® portable external hard drive enables 2K and 4K digital cinema, 2K DLSR/ Photography and other digital content creation.
Evolution Series
The new G-Technology Evolution series will comprise the G-DOCK ev with Thunderbolt connection, the G-DRIVE ev and the G-DRIVE ev PLUS external hard drives with USB 3.0 connections that will promise give high speed data transfers. The G-DRIVE ev is a rugged USB 3.0, 2.5-inch, 7200RPM external hard drive with transfer rates of up to 136MB/s and is available in 1TB or 500GB capacities. The G-DRIVE ev PLUS external hard drive delivers transfer rates up to 250MB/s and comes in 1TB capacity.
These drives can be paired with the G-Dock or be standalone drives. If you are shooting 2K and 4K, the drives are designed for you. With the GDock ev the drives are interchangeable. You can take these into the field or shoot in a studio and not worry about running out of space (providing you’ve got enough of these suckers). These drives can be configured in a variety of ways including, JBOD, of Raid 1 for redundancy or RAID 0 for performance. They can also be used as standalone external drives. Because the G-Dock is a two bay hot swappable drive system, you can use it as a Thunderbolt hub you can spread its cost across multiple hard drives.
The G-DOCK ev, which includes two 1TB G-DRIVE ev modules, will be available in May through G-Technology and its Premier Channel Partners for an MSRP of $749.95. Designed as a flexible and scalable ecosystem, additional 500GB or 1TB G-DRIVE ev modules can be purchased separately for a MSRP of $149.95 and $199.95, respectively. For increased performance the 1TB G-DRIVE ev PLUS modules can also be purchased separately for use with the G-DOCK ev with Thunderbolt. The G-DRIVE ev PLUS modules will be available this summer for $349.95 MSRP.
G-Drive Pro
The new G-Technology G-Drive pro is what the company is billing as a compact, desktop external hard drive that delivers hard drive capacity with SSD-like performance. It delivers constant data transfer rates of up to 480MB/s, three times faster than standard 3.5-inch desktop external hard drives. Once again, they’re pitching these to the 2k and 4k video crowds who require a lot of storage and fast transfer rates to maintain a useable workflow. 2K video uses about 1TB an hour and needs about 305MB of throughput a second.
These drives support compressed 4K and multiple streams of 2K, HDV, DVCPro HD, XDCAM HD, ProRes 4444 and uncompressed SD Video. The G-DRIVE Pro with Thunderbolt will be available this summer through G-Technology and its Premier Channel Partners. The MSRP for the 4TB G-DRIVE with Thunderbolt will be $849.95. A 2TB G-DRIVE PRO with Thunderbolt solution will be available for $699.95.
