Tamron has been a brand known for its iconic all-round zoom lenses. The company has introduced some wonderful lenses, for both full frame and APS-C models, which has earned praises from people. Tamron is now introducing a new new wide angle zoom lens, that will be of help for both Canon and Nikon users. Have a look.
The lens in question is the 17-70mm f2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (Model B070), which comes following the introduction of 11-20mm f2.8 Di III-A RXD and 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD. With the 17-70mm, you get an in-between offering for APS-C models, especially for Canon RF. The lens is also said to feature a 4.1x zoom ratio, while maintaining the aperture across the zoom range. Here are the specs:

- Focal length of 25.5-105mm for Nikon Z and 27.2-112mm for Canon RF cameras
- 16 elements in 12 groups
- Minimum focusing distance of 0.19m at 17mm and 0.39m at 70mm
- Magnification ratio of 1:4.8 at the wide end and 1:5.2 at the telephoto end
- A filter thread of 67mm
- Diameter of 74.6mm
- Price of $749
The VC stands for vibrant compensation, which is said to result in fast and quite autofocus. The 17-70mm is also going to reduce focus breathing, which helps hybrid users. The lens is lightweight, small, and can help photographers capture multiple genres. This includes street photography, portraits, weddings, events, and more. The lens is also weather resistant, and is said to offer beautiful bokeh, thanks to the aperture.

The Canon RF lens is said to come with an AF/MF switch and a VC ON/OFF switch. However, the Nikon version does not feature the same. The reason for it has not been revealed, but it may be a result of accessibility. At the same time, what also must be that the same focal range exists for Sony and Fujifilm, which was introduced in 2020. The newer version has some changes, especially for Canon.
Given the performance of the 11-20mm on Canon, we only have hope for the best. As we said in our review:
First off, know that if you purchase the Tamron 11-20mm lens, it will autofocus very well on Canon RF cameras. This is surprising to us as back in the DSLR days, the autofocus of third-party lenses wasn’t so great. But now, you can’t really tell the difference between how it works on a Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, or Canon camera.
At under $1000, the Tamron 17-70mm can be great for many photographers working across different genres. It remains to be seen how photographers will react to it.
