Third-party lens manufacturers have been pretty open about introducing newer models for full frame cameras. However, they are now also looking at medium format systems, which are limited in number. An example is Chinese optical manufacturer Nakaichi Optical, who is now introducing a new wide angle lens for those who need a budget offering. It seems like they’re following in the trail of Mitakon, who released an excellent 65mm f1.4 years ago.
According to Asobinet, the new lens is the 30mm f2.4, which is priced at 3,580 yuan (approximately $493). This is a medium format manual focus wide angle lens, which makes it a prominent addition. The specs are attached below:

- 35mm Equivalent: Approximately 24mm
- Minimum Aperture: F22
- Optical Construction: 13 elements in 12 groups
- Aperture Blades: 11
- Minimum Focus Distance: 0.2m

Fujifilm’s GFX lenses are great, but they cost over $800, and can go up to $4500. The least priced lens is the GF 35-70mm f4.5-5.6, which is $800. The only concern is that the aperture, which is very narrow for its type. Nakaichi’s 30mm f2.4 is a pretty great option, and it costs 1/3rd of the other offering.
Since the lens is 24mm equivalent, then the best use of it is for landscape photography, architecture, interiors, and environmental portraiture. For those who want Fujifilm’s lenses, they have GF 30mm f3.5 R WR and GF 30mm f5.6, both of them are above $1500.
Other third-party lenses include Laowa, TTArtisan, and Mitakon Zhongyi’s prime lenses, which are over 50mm options. In that regard, one will gradually rely on wide angle options for their needs. Those shooting in low light will adore this one as well.
If you have the patience to become accustomed to the nuances of this lens, its heavy girth is worth the lower price point. As with anything, it becomes easier and quicker to use with practice. The versatile focal length is ideal for a variety of applications, and the character provided by this lens inspires a lot of creativity. The Mitakon 65mm f1.4 lens is a welcome choice within the Fujifilm GFX lineup.

There are reports of other third-party makers launching an AF lens for the system. However, it remains to be seen when or how it all turns out.
