Nikon has adapted to the mirrorless world with some interesting cameras over the years. For instance, the Z9, Z7 II, Z6 III, and Zf are cameras that have catered to the varying needs of creators around the world. While the company promised to not launch much in 2025, it appears that will not be the case in 2026. It has now come to our attention that Nikon may launch a new camera, which will further help street photographers get the best of their work.
According to Nikon Rumors, there is buzz about a new camera that is likely to join the Z series by 2026. This means that the Z9 II is likely to slip and be pushed to 2027.
So, what exactly is the camera about? While there are no in-depth details about its specifications, the report notes the following:
- No EVF: The device will not include an electronic viewfinder at launch. This will mark a departure from Nikon’s ideology, since nearly all its Z cameras feature an EVF.
- Full frame sensor: The camera is likely to cater to professionals, as more and more people are going after full frame cameras over APS-C.
- Slim, compact body: The device is also said to be really thin, measuring just 22-25mm in thickness. This means the model could be designed after the Nikon ZR.
- Photography focus: Unlike the ZR, the new camera will tailor to still photographers. One reason could be that Nikon RED models are already catering to video needs, which means photographers will need their own camera very soon.
It is unclear whether the camera will feature a partially stacked sensor or something else, but it is safe to say that the community is quite delighted to get a device that could be smaller than the Zf. But while some are okay with not having an EVF, some older photographers prefer to have one.
In other words, Nikon could be going after the same photographers who are choosing Ricoh GR or Fujifilm GFX 100RF, since smaller cameras are now in demand by many serious creators. Nikon also has a chance to offer something luxurious but compact for street photographers, many of whom rely on the Leica M series for their work.
The question that still arises is what this model could be. And there are a few options that one can think of:
- A full frame version of the Z30, with simple controls and a touchscreen LCD.
- A revamped version of the Nikon Coolpix A, with a better design and sensor.
- Another retro-style camera, but a more compact form factor for travel photography.
The camera is said to be intended for serious enthusiasts as well, who want something lightweight, discreet, and perfect for candids or walkaround shooting. In any case, Nikon will have to work with compact lenses, such as a power-zoom lens or a fixed 28mm lens, depending on who they are catering to. But if this model is an interchangeable camera, then the chance of many enthusiasts going after it is higher.
It remains to be seen when the company makes an official announcement. If not, then Nikon had better start developing a camera specifically for street photographers soon.
