In recent years, cameras and lenses have reached new technological heights. Each year, we see innovation that breaks barriers, making photography easier than ever. However, with the proliferation of smartphones in the world of cameras, many devices also seem a bit irrelevant to young users. This is where DIY creations come into fill the gap between the chasm of small, unique cameras that offer more character than clarity. An example of this is a Tamagotchi camera, which is stealing hearts on the internet.
In a new post on a Reddit thread, a user named u/kind_of_rare displayed a delightful creation. The tech uses a fully functional digital camera built inside a vintage Tamagotchi toy. The device was shared on the subreddit r/Tamagotchi, and it became a hit on the platform thanks to the nostalgia associated with the device.

According to the users, the device was inspired by Hairo Satoh’s earlier version of the Tamagotchi camera model, and the creator made their own version with a Jinsey Enjoi V4 Tamagotchi shell. The internals resemble a retro camera, as the creator fixed a small lens, sensor, and controls into the toy.
At the same time, a new 200mAh battery upgrade is available for extended use, along with a 30GB memory card and USB Type-C charging and data transfer capabilities. Additionally, the creator soldered functional buttons and reconfigured them for camera control. “Tamagotchis are very slim, so a lot of angle testing was needed to find a sweet spot for the motherboard,” said the creator in the post. “I even learned soldering for this project.” In the end, you get a handmade retro camera that is able to capture images and videos with the aesthetics of the early 2000s.
But beyond the nostalgia, the camera stands out for its playfulness, as well as practicality. It differs from other compact cameras and can also help you remain inconspicuous in places where cameras are not allowed. Some people adored the craftsmanship of the device, while others said it is the coolest investment that blends modern and old tech together. Moreover, with no changes, one gets a device that offers good stage and connectivity, which further makes it an exciting offering for millennials. Some even offered to buy or commission their own units,
The Tamagotchi toy camera is one such invention that proves that, although the demand may be niche, it exists. This device not only pays homage to retro design but also reflects a growing DIY movement where creators can recycle and add their personal flair to one-of-a-kind gadgets. Such inventions prove that as long as there is creativity, there will be buyers. If brands also think of ways to introduce such niche products, they may find ways to hold on to the users for far longer.
