The year 2024 saw some exciting and not-so-great cameras and lenses launch. While we have been actively reporting on the camera market and the ups and downs of sales, those articles were limited to the sales trend of that month. In fact, we recently published an article that highlights the most preferred camera by pros in 2024. However, today, we bring to another survey, which has been published by one of Japan’s leading camera stores. We were surprised to see the result. Here’s a look at the 10 best-selling cameras and lenses of the previous year.
The Unlikely Winner Is…
The list was launched by Map Camera (via Photo Rumors), one of Japan’s most sought-after stores. According to them, the cameras and lenses that were sold the most were curated based on the number of devices sold.
Here’s a look at the top 10 cameras of 2024:
- Fujifilm X-100VI
- Fujifilm X-T50
- Sony A7cII
- Nikon Zf
- Fujifilm X-T5
- Nikon Z6 III
- Sony A7IV
- Canon R6 II
- Canon R5 II
- Nikon Z8
Here is a look at the 10 best-selling lenses:
- Nikon 24-120mm f4
- Tamron 28-200mm f2.8-5.6 III
- Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM II
- Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G II
- Fujifilm 16-50mm f3.5-5.6
- Nikon Z 28-400mm f4-8
- Canon 100-400mm f5.6-8 IS USM
- Nikon Z 180-600mm f5.6-6.3
- Canon 50mm f1.8 STM
- Sony 70-200mm f2.8 GM II
This statistic about the top 10 cameras and lenses is largely limited to Japan and does not reflect the global numbers. However, despite that, it showcases what many people opt for today. Furthermore, while the demographic of these purchases has not been revealed, you can predict who the ones opting for one camera over the other are.
Gen Z is Driving Up Sales
The first two cameras, the Fujifilm X100 VI and the Fujifilm X-T50 are top choices of content creators and Gen Z. The former camera was a rage on TikTok, which helped to boost its sales and even led to a massive shortage. As for the latter, it is an advanced video camera, an ideal choice for users who focus on moving images. Either way, it showcases Fujifilm’s great year and how far they have come in just the past year. While they are yet to launch new devices in 2025, the buzz around what is in store may further lead to a moral boost.
Interestingly, the only 2024 releases on the list besides the X100 VI and X-T50 are the Nikon Z6 III and the Canon R5 II. The remaining six cameras were launched either in 2023 or before that. For example, Sony a7 IV. In a way, it proves that users still want a device that is cost-effective and meets their needs. In fact, the a7 IV making it to the list proves that cameras launched about five years ago can still be great choices for people who are upgrading from their phones.
As for lenses, we see a trend of zooms being purchased more often than a prime. It could be that people require range and build for certain lenses, as opposed to investing in primes alone. Interestingly, Tamron is the only third-party lens that has made it to the list, especially when Map Cameras also sells lenses from Meike, Sigma, Viltox, Zeiss, and more. Although we aren’t surprised that Sigma did not make it to the list, as we have reported before, the company has some major autofocus and size issues.
2025 may bring significant changes, but for now, it’s evident that Fujifilm has more at stake. Whether they will improve their offerings this year is still uncertain. However, it promises to be an exciting time for photographers.
