Macro photography lets you view an unseen world that is teeming with otherworldly creatures. From insects to spiders to pollen in flowers, there is a lot one can discover with a macro lens. As the genre has gained more popularity in recent years—with many photography contests also responsible for this support—camera manufacturers, too, are aiming to shake things up. And from the world of whispers, it seems a new Canon macro lens is on the way. Perhaps it could find its way to our best macro lens guide.
Canon Macro Lens: A “First” to Revive The Industry?
Cutting to the chase, according to Canon Rumors, the company hopes to release a new macro lens by mid-2025. According to sources, the lens may be a “macro design first,” but what the “first” stands for is still a mystery. Canon has multiple patents under its wings, so we have to wait and see how it all plays out. Furthermore, the report states that the lens will also cost “more” than the RF 100mm f2.8L IS USM Macro, which, in many ways, was an innovative lens. It featured an SA (Spherical Aberration) ring, which allows photographers to control the sharpness. Now, beating that will be quite exciting to see.

There is a chance that the lens will offer larger-than-life-size images, and then it will just be an update of the MP-E 65mm. Perhaps it could also feature fast autofocus. I’m not sure how that would work. Maybe a zoom macro lens with a 1:1 ratio? Well, then, it would still not be an industry-leading lens, per se, as Nikon achieved this with the 70-180mm f4.5-5.6 AF-D Micro-NIKKOR. The new Canon macro lens may also have tilt or shift features, which is already a thing at the company.
A year ago, Canon patented an autofocus tilt-shift lens with automated in-camera control, which could be the first in the industry. According to the report, the lens allows photographers to capture images at various intervals, making it easy to stitch an image. Since the macro world has varied details that we are fascinated with, a lens like this could be a wonder for macro photographers.
A Glimpse at Canon’s Past For The Future
While we may not have been too excited about Canon’s new product launches, we certainly have been quite vocal about Canon’s excellent optical image quality. Yes, we give credit where it is due. We already mentioned the RF 100, which was an exceptional lens. However, if you look at Canon’s EF series, you will see many exciting editions. For instance, the EF 100mm f2.8L IS USM is the first Canon lens with image stabilization. There is also the EF-M 28mm f3.5 Macro IS STM, which includes an in-built macro light, and the EF-S 35mm f2.8 Macro IS STM with a built-in ring light.

In more recent years, we have seen the tilt-shift lens, which has a macro feature. They are not truly 1:1 macro lenses, but rather, 1:2. However, when we heard Canon is working on this, we were quite excited. For once, we will get images that are not too sharp and often you a softer, vintage look.
Looking at Canon’s history, it is pretty obvious that the company is innovative. However, with the current direction they are taking, which is a great focus on content creation, they may lose out on those who genuinely create images for the love of photography. As a result, the new Canon macro lens must beat the obvious. Perhaps it would be a zoom tilt shift? If you are raising the price, you might as well raise the bar. Rather than doing something half-heartedly, Canon should go along the way.
