Of late, Canon seems to be in the news a lot. The company has also been releasing new products such as the EOS R1 and the EOS R5 Mk II, the 28-70mm F2.8 IS STM, and the RF 100-300mm f2.8 L IS USM, among others. However, many Canon heads are still highly focused on the updates of the new flagship cameras, which are aplenty. From shipment delays to first impressions, both cameras have kept people guessing. Just a few days ago, we reported about a potential firmware release, but Canon shot us down. Now, it seems the report was not false at all! Here are the details.
Canon EOS R5 Mk II Finally Gets an Update
Canon reached out to us, sharing the details of the new firmware for Canon EOS R5 Mk II. Some of the upgrades include movie format, LCD sensitivity, auto white balance, and so on. Here’s a look at what the new software can fix:
- Fixes an issue in which movies captured in RAW/SRAW format may not play back properly on applications due to the attached lens and camera not communicating.
- Improves the stability of the touch operation control when the [Touch control] is set to [Sensitive].
- Fixes an issue in which the camera’s LCD display may become abnormal after the camera resumes operations from the [Viewfinder off] state.
- Fixes an issue in which the camera may stop working properly when the shutter button is operated while the ‘busy’ message is displayed on the screen.
- Fixes an issue in which Err70 may be displayed when the display mode is switched between the LCD screen and viewfinder while the ‘busy’ message is displayed on the screen.
- Fixes an issue in which the camera’s LCD display becomes abnormal after using EOS Utility to capture and import movies.
- Fixes an issue in which movies captured using EOS Utility may not be played back on the camera.
- Optimizes the auto white balance for specific environments when the Custom Picture function is set to [On].
The firmware version 1.0.1. can be downloaded from Canon’s website.
The Device Will Get Another Update
In our previous article, we shared that a few people faced a bug when using the EOS R5 Mk II, where the LCD turned green while shooting a video. Since we do not know what caused the screen to turn green in the first place, we aren’t sure whether the firmware will fix the issue. We still haven’t received the review unit yet, so we can’t truly comment on how much the firmware improves the Canon EOS R5 Mk II.
Moreover, we have also been informed that a new firmware will be released, which will particularly help the camera with the LP-E6NH battery. Canon launched the LP-E6P, which is recommended for the EOS R5 Mk II’s needs. However, with the LP-E6NH, users will likely face some limitations, including 24.00p/23.98p video recording. The new firmware, thus, reportedly solves this issue. The date for this has not been disclosed yet.
The firmware updates also come as Canon is releasing new lenses to meet the demands of hybrid shooters. However, most changes seem to be largely made to meet video needs. Canon isn’t the only company focusing on this new segment, which has gained more popularity in recent years. How the Canon EOS R5 Mk II performs in our test remains to be seen. You may have to wait a little longer.
