Photography is nothing but writing with light. Every time the shutter opens, the light on the sensor or the film freezes a fragment of a second. Thus, like a poetic prose or poem, elements such as the frame, colors, subjects, and themes converge to create a visual sentence that alters one’s life. Akin to the written eulogies about the pleasures of summertime excitement, photography, too, evokes sentiments with the varying play of light. For instance, a cozy room—bathing in the honey-yellow brilliance of the setting sun—will elicit feelings of serenity, contentment, and a sense of fulfillment. However, contrasty pictures captured under the scorching sun could have an opposing influence, as the recent exhibit at Bruce Silverstein Gallery depicts.

The gallery in New York has organized a captivating showcase called Summer Glow, which pays an ode to the magnificence of summer rays. From the canary golden hour to the indigo hues of twilight to the harshest of shadows at noon, summer offers this and much more. The exhibition will commence on July 11 and will conclude on September 7, 2024.
To celebrate the season’s diversity, Bruce Silverstein Gallery has curated the works of 30 internationally renowned artists. Spanning between 1903 and 2018, the showcase features photographs that will alter your understanding of the interplay of light. Each photographer in the vast collection offers a remarkable perspective on the season. From Henri Cartier-Bresson‘s ‘decisive moment’ framing the mundane beauty of daily life to the serene landscapes of Manuel Alvarez Bravo to intimate yet lonely self-portraits of Francesca Woodman, the showcase depicts tranquil and vibrant compositions that will be etched in your memory.

But, Why Must You Care?
Besides the transient glimpses of an era gone by, the showcase at Bruce Silverstein Gallery is a significant path to discovering disregarded history. Each of the 30 artists presents a slice of truth that you may have listened to your parents converse about or have, in some ways, lived it yourself. For instance, Dan Weiner’s photograph of people sunbathing in Czechoslovakia (1958) is our lived reality. But when you closely examine his picture, everything appears to be different. It includes the metamorphosis of urban architecture, fashion, and even the lack of phones. His image portrays a time when talking to your friends in a public space didn’t mean you goggle at your phone, where influencers were not ruining the scenery, and when there was a general knack for relishing life unhurriedly.

But that’s not all. The exhibit at Bruce Silverstein Gallery will train you in new ways of seeing things. Visiting an exhibit, especially about a group, allows one to comprehend how a subject can be photographed in countless fashions. In this respect, summer can be melancholic as it can be thrilling, soft, boisterous, tranquil, and harsh. The globe is separated into dualities, but sometimes, that aspect is neglected due to our finite experiences, which drive us to notice a subject in a specific manner. An exhibit such as Summer Glow will widen your hoodwinked viewpoints. Thus, with every new day, you discover more ways of honing your craft.
