Associated Press: Shutterbugs Ditching Digital For Film

AP released a video story not long ago exploring how the recent trend in photography is how users are ditching digital for film. According to the video, “Shutterbugs are rediscovering aperture settings, ISO film, shutter speeds and other terminology.” The piece goes on to talk to a Lomography store owner.

I for one think this is kind of dissing digital, but there is a recent trend of shooting with film again. That’s not to say I hate film. The Leica M7 and 50mm F1.4 Summilux review is in the works. I did not want to go to my day job on the second day of testing this lens, but I had to. What I wanted to do was stay out all day. I wanted to stay out and play with the Nikon 24mm f/1.4G ED AF-S RF SWM lensall day and all night. But alas, I could not. What I was able to do was visit Sinatra Park in Hoboken, New Jersey and evaluate its wide angle, low light, and motion capabilities. I also found myself looking at the sharpness in low light and paying attention to how the autofocus worked.

To give the G2 a first go-around, I took it to my usual stomping grounds of Union Square and the East Village. I loaded the camera with the 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens, giving it a bright, fairly wide-angled view, perfect for crowded street-level photography and large area shots.

Take a look at the way that the majority of people take photos: I’m not talking about the photo enthusiasts, I’m talking about the average person that has a camera and isn’t a total photo nerd. After careful observances, you’ll notice that they take a majority of pictures with their phone. This goes double or triple for iPhone, Android or Blackberry users. The reason for this is because of the instant sharing capabilities. As you know, most point-and-shoots can’t do this. Sure, a standard point-and-shoot can deliver better quality images, but this group of users won’t be able to tell the difference. Apple doesn’t seem to have incorporated any of the features that I asked for a while ago, but the audience of people I’m talking about here just want to point, shoot and share. So does this mean that a device from Apple could in turn destroy the point-and-shoot market?

And so the battle of the pancake lenses commences! In one corner, we’ve got the Sony 16mm F2.8 on the Sony NEX 5. In the other, the Panasonic 20mm F1.7 on the Panasonic GF-1. Each camera was shot in aperture priority at ISO 200 and tested on a Home Depot flier. Further, each camera was also focused on the Husky Logo. Let’s see how they did.

I haven’t worked with the Micro Four Thirds system much. It’s still a pretty new tech, and between its price, complexity, and smaller-than-SLR sensor size, I wasn’t entirely sold on the concept. Canon showed off at its expo two new zoom lenses that are as different as night and day. On one side, the 70-300mm F4-5.6 L IS zoom lens offers a range of high-powered telephoto reach with a seemingly excellent image stabilization system. On the other side, the 8-15mm F4 L fisheye zoom lens offers a wide to really-super-ultra-wide angle, accomplishing some impressive optical gymnastics in the process. I spent some time with both lenses, and I was impressed (and at one point, amazed) by what I saw.
