Manu Cabañero Unveils Next Image in Splash Wars Series

Photographer Manu Cabañero worked on the Splash Wars photography series a while back as an ode to Star Wars. It was a lot of work to create these images and just today he unveiled Mara Jade. Manu tells the Phoblographer he created this one because he didn’t really create a photo another Jedi yet.

“Mara was a good choice to show the Light Side of the Force.” he tells us. “Mara Jade is a fictional character in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, in this case I have more freedom to represent their physical appearance because there are different interpretations of their appearance and clothing,”

He did it for “May the 4th”–an iconic date for Star Wars nerds.

Creating the Photograph: Manu Cabañero’s “Splash Wars: Darth Vader” (Slightly NSFW)

after

Creating the Photograph is an original series where photographers teach you about how they concepted an image, shot it, and edited it. The series has a heavy emphasis on teaching readers how to light. Want to be featured? Email chrisgampat[at]thephoblographer[dot]com.

Earlier on, the Phoblographer featured the work of Manu Cabañero, who did the Splash Wars series of images. Manu drew his inspiration from the great Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz and his Milky Pinups series. The idea: to create clothing on models out of milk–but to make the milk hit in shapes that resemble a specific look. In this case, we’re talking about Star Wars.

Manu was kind enough to walk us through his creation of the image that resembles Darth Vader.

Turning 10: Chris Gampat Gets Candid About Running The Phoblographer

The Phoblographer is turning 10! Party! Well, actually, a conversation with our EIC, Chris Gampat – even if I had to twist his arm to talk to me!

“Let me get this right. You‘re asking to interview me on my own site?” Phoblographer Editor in Chief and Founder Chris Gampat asks. “That’s right. And with the site turning 10 later this year, now’s the best time to do it” I tell him. Chris once said to me “Dan, I trust you with interviews and would like to give you as much creative license as possible.” Famous last words, as just when The Phoblographer is about to turn 10, I want to interview him! So like the annoying kid who got a voice recorder for Christmas, I relentlessly corner him until he has no escape – encouraging him to answer my questions.

It has been a great 10 years: a story full of emotion and inspiration. It’s a story I’ve only been a part of for a short period of time, but one I’ve loved every single page of so far. So, whilst Chris may have been hesitant to speak with me, I’m super stoked he did. With that, let’s take a look at the wonderful world of being an editor, business owner and pretty much everything else in between…

Seriously Ask Yourself: Are You a Photographer, or a Photo Editor?

This has come up in a number of situations where I see loads of tutorials on how to make an image look a certain way.

I’ve been quietly contemplating the idea of whether someone is a photographer or a photo editor, and at the same time whether or not they have the right to say that they’re a photographer or a photo editor. Go ahead and say, “Just shoot and do whatever,” but I think this is a major part of one’s photographic identity. If you screw a light bulb into a lamp you’re not an electrician. If you clean your apartment you’re not hired help. If you cook a special dinner for 25 people you are neither a woman of the kitchen or a chef (and I’ve specifically heard this said before by both genders). So if you focus on your Lightroom, Photoshop or Capture One skills, are you really a photographer?

Splash Wars Creates Star Wars Characters Using Milk and Models

Yai-Vader

All images by Manu Cabanero. Used with permission.

“I’m a geek passionate for films and comics.” says Manu Cabanero in his email to the Phoblographer about his latest and greatest photo project called Splash Wars. Inspired by the work of Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz, Manu is a self-taught portrait photographer based in Barcelona.

While exploring Behance, I found his profile and the work he was doing way back in September. But Manu told me of a bigger project he was working on. So far, he’s only done with part one of Splash Wars, and there is much more to come.

Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz’s Latest Shoot Continues His Stopping Liquids at High Speed

Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz recently shot an ad for Atom Compression Wear using his signature look.

When I think about photographers who are really, truly unique, the name Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz of course comes to mind. Very few have been able to do what he does. We’ve covered lots of his work in the past with him making it really big with his Milky Pinups, then Splash Heroes, Bamboo ForestFallen Angels, and Splashscreen. But his latest project is much more commercial and done for Atom Compression Wear.
