Field Review: Sony A55 (Day 5)

with 5 comments

Using the A55 at night was probably the most fun I’ve had with the camera. The large, bright external screen was easily visible in low light which made framing a snap. Also, it allowed for a much more stable shooting position. I could pull my elbows into my body and hold the camera low to create a very solid and stable shooting platform. This shooting stance, along with the in body stabilization, allowed me to get clean images with shutter speeds as low as 1/5 of a second. Click through to see how the A55 manged in the dark.

Waiting to Cross - Sony A55 with 35mm F/1.8 SAM

In the previous days’ posts we reviewed the A55‘s special features, handling and photo quality but the A55 doesn’t stop there. Like most recent DSLRs, the A55 shoots video and it does it quite well.

Sony A55 with 35mm F/1.8 SAM - Creative Style = Black & White

Like I said in the previous days’ posts, the A55 seems to be geared towards individuals that are stepping up from a point and shoot (P&S) or an advanced P&S (e.g. Panasonic LX-5) to a DSLR. The vast majority of these people make the jump because they want something that will “take better pictures” of their family, friends, and the all important vacation photographs. So I decided to take the A55 into Boston to see how it would perform from a tourist’s perspective. I was lucky enough to get a nice warm day to venture out into the city and boy did I pay for it…people were EVERYWHERE! The Boston Common was so packed that you could hardly see any grass. It also seemed like everyone was out with their DSLR. Funny, I never see people out shooting in the winter.

Wimps. OK, enough complaining…on with the review. To test out the Sony A55, I hit three of Boston’s tourist hotspots: The Boston Common, The Public Gardens, and Newbury Street. Let’s see how the A55 held up.

Sony A55 with 35mm F/1.8 SAM

As I said in Day 1, camera companies seem to be trying to outdo each other on the number of features and toys they can jam into their small DSLRs. So is it all fluff or do these new features and functions actually help people take better photographs? Let’s take a look at the A55‘s features in action to find out.

Ever since Sony introduced the NEX series, specifically the NEX-5, I’ve been keeping a closer eye on Sony‘s photographic offerings. Like it or hate it, the NEX-5 is a pretty amazing camera. A full APS-C sensor in a body smaller than many point and shoot cameras. Brilliant! So I thought, if the NEX-5 is such a great camera, let’s see what they can do with a “normal” sized DSLR. Enter the Sony A55.
