The Canon S95
Field Review is currently in the process of being published, but RAW Photo support through Adobe Lightroom has only recently happened. In the rest of the Field Review, you will read about Will Greenwald being frustrated with the RAW image samples not being supported and therefore shooting JPEGS. The reason why is because he wrote the review about a week ago from my writing this posting. Why can’t he update it? Will has left The Phoblographer to join the ranks of PCMag.com. As such, here are some before editing and after editing samples of the Canon S95‘s raw images.

After an afternoon of shooting the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market, Times Square, and Bryant Park, I discovered some of the most notable issues with the S95‘s picture quality: extensive halos and noise. If you do any shooting outside or near fluorescent light sources, you’ll see purple and green fringes along contrasting lines between light and dark objects. Photographers tend to shun compact cameras of all stripe. It’s easy to understand why: they’re much slower than SLRs, their sensors are much smaller, and they have inferior picture quality and low-light performance. Still, camera makers keep producing high-end, premium compacts with features aimed at appealing to skilled photographers. They can’t replace SLRs, but in some cases they can augment them, thanks to their small size and flexibility. That’s the thinking behind the Canon S95, a high-end compact camera brimming with manual controls and unique features.

The general consensus for years and years was that Leica simply took Panasonic cameras, changed them just a little bit and sold them for much more. With the dawn of the Leica D-LUX 5
and the Panasonic LX-5, enough differences can really be seen between the two to justify the purchase. If you’re interested in specs, take a look at our comparison against the Canon S95 which is essentially it’s biggest competitor.

Both the Canon S95
and the Panasonic LX-5
are available for purchase now at Amazon and readers may perhaps be confused as to which one to get. Though we do not have image quality comparisons to show (and we’ve only handled the S95 and the Leica D-LUX 4 which compares to the LX-3) we can compare and contrast specs.
Editor’s Note: Reviews of both cameras have been fully completed.

Canon has announced an update to their compact camera line. Amongst the cameras is the Canon S95, SD4500 IS, SX130 IS. All upgrades seem to be minor from their predecessors.
