Battle of the Ring Flashes: Orbis vs Ray Flash (As Tested at NYC Comic Con in Practical Use)
Comic Con has been over with for a little while now, but if it has solidified anything that I’ve been taught it’s that your lighting is paramount. The lighting on a convention floor won’t always be ideal, and you can even take your on-camera flash’s capabilities a bit further with a light modifier. Last year, I tested the Orbis at the event and this year I took the Ray Flash—a close competitor. Though the Orbis and Ray Flash have received shining stars from us, here’s a test from us in practical use for portraits.

Field Review: ExpoImaging Ray Flash (Day 3- More Fun Portraits)
By far, I’m going to have to say that the ExpoImaging Ray Flash has my vote as the best Ring Flash attachment to use. The other day, my friend Steph and I got together and had some fun photoshoot time in her room as she helped me finish the testing of the Ray Flash. Field Review: Rokinon 85mm F/1.4 (Day 3- Portraits with Flash)
In Day 2 of the field review, I concluded that stopping down a lot would often making focusing with the Rokinon 85mm F/1.4 much simpler. And then the portrait test came. With me often stopping down to F/2.8, F/4 or F/5.6, I’d need to really ensure that my focusing was spot on.
And oh man, was this difficult.
Getting Your Micro Four Thirds Camera to Use a Ring Flash
Boredom = the creation of the awesomest photography hack ever. Ring flashes are items that I’m extremely smitten with for the particular look they give off. People see them all over in ads, and when I recently invested into a Micro Four Thirds camera, I tried to figure out a way to use a ring flash with it. Here’s a story of trial, error, frustration, boredom, and success.
And in the end, it proved effective in being extremely fun for me.
Book Review: DIY Photography- Home Studio Photography
Do it yourself projects are usually very fun. I used to work on things like this back in college when I was more into cinematography. DIYPhotography’s Udi Tirosh, the creator of the well reviewed Bokeh Master’s Kit, has written a very informative and carefully explained book: Home Studio Photography. The eBook is a complete listing of a bunch of fun projects to work on at home when you’re bored. Beyond boredom, many of the creations have practical applications in the photo world as well.
