Quick Hands On Review: Leica 21mm f3.4 Elmarit Lens
After announcing the Leica 21mm f3.4 Elmarit lens in June of this year, Leica finally brought the lens to American soil where Gevon and I got some brief playtime with the lens at Photo Plus East. Despite the lens being a tiny bit slow for my tastes, it is probably the lens that has turned me onto the 21mm focal length after trying it on the Leica M9P (M9-P)
But how does it perform?
Hands On: Datacolor Spyder Color Calibrator for Apple iPad
During Photo Plus Expo 2011, we got a live demo of the Datacolor Spyder color calibration system for the Apple iPad. I’ve known monitors, televisions and other displays to be color calibrated, but I never thought of calibrating an iPad. However, it makes total sense since many photographers use them to display their portfolios or even on shoots as a monitor.
Take a look at the demo video after the jump.
Hands On: Zeiss 25mm f2 for Canon EF
At Photo Plus Expo 2011, Zeiss announced the new 25mm f2 lens in Canon and Nikon mount. Fortunately, they had a unit available at the show to play with. After a brief test, we were able to secure a loaner unit and a full review will be coming. But here are some quick first impressions of the lens on the Canon 5D Mk II.
Note that this lens was, “the closest pre-production unit to the production version” of the lens.
Hands on with the Nikon 1: J1 & V1
At Photo Plus Expo, I had the chance to quickly play with Nikon’s new mirrorless cameras. To tell you the truth, I did not want to do this at first. When the Nikon 1 series was announced, these little scamps made my heart sink a little. These cameras are Nikon to the core and there is a certain heritage there that I did not think was being lived up to. These cameras, to me, fell between Nikon’s top of the line point and shoots and the DX cameras like the D3100 and D5100. But you know what? I was wrong. You should not judge a book by its cover. While I am not the biggest fan for the Nikon 1 J1 the V1 is much better than I thought it would be. Read the rest of this entry »
EXCLUSIVE Hands On Review: Shooting a Party with the Fuji X10
At Photo Plus Expo 2011, we got our first hands on experience with the newly announced Fuji X10. Marketed to the world as a point and shoot with phenomenal image quality due to a larger sensor while maintaining stunning good looks the on the outside, the Fujifilm X100 gives design cues to the Fujifilm X10, but targeted at a different price point.
On the second night of Photo Plus, I attended a party (one of many) where after a couple of rounds, I tried out the X10 with a flash mounted on it. Shooting all JPEGs and with the only intention being to have fun, did the Fujifilm X10 surprise me?
