Field Review: Olympus XZ-1 (Day 4)

by Chris Gampat on April 14, 2011

Every year, I go to shoot the Pillow Fight in Union Square. Typically, I carry a DSLR with me. This year though, I decided to be a psycho and carry the Olympus XZ-1 and a Vivitar SF-4000. The combo did much better than I originally thought they would, until a problem occurred.

Come To Our Education Director’s Gallery Opening!

by Chris Gampat on April 9, 2011

le Printemps Group art show

Hey everyone, just letting you all know that Sander-Martijn, the Phoblographer’s Education Director, has a gallery opening next week on April 20th from 5-7pm. If you’re in NYC, you should really stop on by. You can see more info on the Facebook page for the event or just read the details down below.

Where:  1199SEIU Gallery: 310 West 43rd ST (between 8th and 9th ave, right by Port Authority)

Time: 5pm to 7pm.

What: There will be many artists showing off their work at this opening. However, Sander is showing 8 pieces – 4 each from Spontaneous Combustion and Naiad. Spontaneous combustion is a series of 10 and Naiad is a series of 8. Both are explorations of transforming a woman using only light and time – to fire and water respectfully. Spontaneous combustion was created in 2007 and Naiad in 2010. Both series are on Sander’s site in the art section.

Also note that Sander-Martijn has his own blog, besides the wonderful work that he does here at The Phoblographer.

Cost: FREE!

I myself will be there, so if you want to meet two of the Phoblographer’s staffers, just leave us a comment here and we’ll be happy to say hello.

Field Review: Canon T3i (Day 3)

by Chris Gampat on March 19, 2011

The day I shot the images in this story is the day that Adobe released the update to allow Lightroom 3 to edit images from the Canon T3i. In Day 1, we gave some first impressions of the Canon T3i and we also did a quick video test. When I first got the unit, the RAW file support wasn’t released yet. The good news: I shot these with the very good Canon 35mm F/1.4 L: perhaps my favorite lens and on our list of recommended glass. While doing this, I never went above ISO 1600. But it’s not all wonderful.

Field Review: Olympus EPL-2 (Day 2)

by Chris Gampat on February 25, 2011

In Day 1, I got my hands dirty with the EPL-2. For the most part, it is so far living up to my expectations. The EPL-2 and I went along the street of NYC and into cafes with my friend Sal from Geek.com. And for once, I shot nothing else but JPEGs. Keep in mind that this review is being done in the viewpoint of a professional looking for a small, carry-around camera. So why JPEGs then? Less work in the end, that’s why!

Hands On: Nikon P7000, Samples with D7000 and D3100

by Gevon Servo on October 29, 2010

Camera Nikon D90 Exposure 0.004 sec (1/250) Aperture f/2.0 Focal Length 35 mm ISO Speed 640

Being a Nikon shooter, Photo Plus Expo 2010 in New York City was an excellent time for me to visit Nikont. Nikon has new lenses like the their 24mm F/1.4 which we reviewed not too long ago, as well as the 35mm F/1.4 and their 85mm F/1.4. I got to see some incredible examples of what these lenses could do. I was able to get sample images with the Nikon D7000 and D3100 which I talked about in a post several weeks ago. I also finally got my hands on the P7000. There was no news on the next full frame from Nikon.

Quick Hands On With the Canon 7DSV

by Chris Gampat on October 28, 2010

When Canon finally came out and announced the 7D SV, photographers with special niche needs looked at it with interest. We were able to get photos of the menu shortly after that and here at Photo Plus Expo 2010 we got personal fondling time with the camera. Chuck Westfall and other PR reps gave me a quick tour.
